John Murray may have lost his British lightweight title on the scales on Friday but the 24 year old Manchester phenom had everything go his way enroute to stopping opponent Scott Lawton last night at Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England.

Murray came out of the gates on fire and was bent on knocking out his more experienced foe. The former British champ strafed Lawton upstairs and down until the man from Stoke was canvassed near the end of the first frame.

Lawton beat the count but the round ended before Murray could uncoil his follow-up assault.

The Mancunian started the second looking to bust up Lawton but the challenger had begun to get the timing of Murray and managed to negate much of what was hurled his way and managed some offense as well.

Lawton patiently waited for Murray to slow down over the next few frames but a well-placed rib shot from the younger man had Lawton on shaky ground in the fifth.

The challenger was still hurt in the sixth and this time there was no bell to save Lawton as Murray poured it on and forced the referee to pull off a rescue operation halfway through the frame.

The British lightweight title remains vacant despite the impressive win by Murray, 27-0 (15), who could face former unified world champion Juan Diaz later this year.

Lawton, 26-5-1 (5), sees a six fight win streak snapped as the former English titlist just didin’t have the firepower to pull off an upset.

On the undercard, welterweight Tom Glover, 8-5-3 (0), gained revenge upon Nadeem Siddique, 22-2 (6), when Siddique was DQ’d for low blows in the ninth frame.

Bantamweight Asamoah Wilson, 1-4 (1), shocked hyped up Canadian prospect Andrew Singh Kooner, 9-2 (4), in the first round of their scheduled eight rounder.
