Friday night, P J Rowson and Errol Johnson promoted a fightnight which saw Jason Welborn successfully defend his Midlands Area Welterweight Title against ‘Super’ Scot Haywood.

The Bill was originally set to headline the re-match between Enzo Maccarinelli and Shane McPhilbin but the contest was pulled after Maccarinelli sustained a hand injury at the beginning of the month.

The Show – hosted at Wolverhampton Civic – also featured six undercard bouts from local boxers.

Jason Welborn (Tividale) v Scott Haywood (Derby)
Midlands Area Welterweight Title

Haywood had lots of support from his travelling fans – maybe that’s what distracted him as he entered – gambolling around the ring!

The contest got off to a fairly evenly matched fight but despite Haywood looking the classier boxer – Welborn’s shots looked heavier. A solid right from Welborn to the head of Haywood saw the Derby man on his knee in the fifth round. Haywood sensibly stayed on one knee for the count then came back with all guns blazing. Welborn came back again to pressure Haywood in the Shinfields corner but Haywood did a great job of blocking the shots and many hit his arms. Haywood then landed some decent rights to the head in succession before Welborn – again – laid in to Haywood. He seemed to put all his weight behind the shots and Haywood took to his knee from a bodyshot. Haywood resumed fighting but was shaking his head as if to say he’d had enough at the end of the round. Jason Shinfield coaxed him back to the corner but the fight was waved off after Haywood seemingly retired himself at the end of the fifth.

Welborn keeps the belt and improves to 10 wins (5 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) while Haywood drops to 22 wins (4 by KO) 7 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw.

Tom Costello (Chelmsley Wood) v Paul Morby (Portsmouth)
6 x 3 Super Middleweight Contest

Costello wins on points and improves to 11 wins (4 by KO) and 1 draw while Morby drops to 6 wins 14 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw

Nathan Reeve (Northampton) v Fikret Remziev (Bulgaria)
6 x 3 Super Bantamweight Contest

Reeve wins by third round Technical Count Out and improves to 6 wins (3 by KO) and 1 loss while Remziev drops to 6 wins (3 by KO) 21 losses (12 by KO) and 1 draw

Steve Pearce (Stourbridge) v Sid Razak (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest

Pearce wins on points against experienced Razak and improves to 4 wins (1 by KO) while Razak drops to 8 wins (3 by KO) 92 losses (4 by KO) having achieved his 100th fight on Friday.

Ricky Summers (Tipton) v Jody Meikle (Scunthorpe)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Debutant Summers had a tough first outing against awkward Meikle but gets off the mark with a points win, while Meikle drops to 3 wins 22 losses (2 by KO)

Andrew Robinson (Birmingham) v Bobby Wood (Walsall)
6 x 2 Super Middleweight Contest

Debutant Robinson gets off the mark with a points win over experienced Wood who drops to 4 wins 18 losses (6 by KO)

Dave Egan (Cannock) v Danny Dontchev (Tooting via Bulgaria)

  • Chris Billam-Smith vs Ryan Rozicki 03/06/2026
Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Why was Usyk so bad? 27/05/2026
What was the major factor for Usyk to perform so poorly against Rico? Rico better than expected, skilled kick boxer, huge size, awkward style, surprise element? Age of Usyk finally showing up? • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
