Last night at Sweeney's in the Sydney suburb of Ingleburn, southpaw Filipino flyweight Danilo Lerio, 14-2-1 (4), won the vacant IBF Australasian belt when the ringside doctor stopped the action against Thai slugger Nuapayak Sakkriprin, 7-3-1 (7).
Lerio was ahead on the cards by wide margins when the bout was halted at 0:46 of the 11th frame in a scheduled 12 rounder.
Also on the bill was former two-time world featherweight title challenger Tommy Browne, 25-5-1 (10), who stopped Thailand's Payakchai Sithparadorn, 11-8 (4), in the first round of a scheduled six at welterweight.
Ernie Gonzalez Jr., 4-2-1 (3), stopped Jerry Spandis, 1-3 (0), in the second frame of an eight rounder.

There was a good card last night at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, as the Australian Heavyweight title changed hands and two of the country's top prospects forged ahead with victories.
Popular heavyweight Bob Mirovic, 29-20-2 (20), lost the domestic crown when his corner threw in the towel at 2:53 of the ninth frame against Sydney based Tongan slugger John Hopoate, 10-2 (10).
Hopoate and Mirvoic had spent the previous eight frames going at it tooth and nail with each enjoying success and also fighting on despite getting hurt numerous times. By the ninth however, Hopoate was
in control and battered the colorful Wyonga based Mirvoic.
A battering combination put Mirvoic on the canvas near round's end and the 42 year old suffered two broken bones in his forearm during the fall, causing his corner to call off the contest.
21 year old super feather William "Cool Willie" Kickett, 13-0 (5), retained his WBO Asia Pacific and IBF Pan Pacific Youth titles with a dominating ten round unanimous decision win against Indonesian southpaw
Zoel Fidal, 16-6-2 (7).
Light welter Lance Gostelow, 17-1-0 (14) won his seventh contest in a row by crushing Argentine visitor Pablo Ernesto Oliveto, 12-10-1 (4), in the very first round. Oliveto had only been stopped once before, by former IBF titlist Malcolm Klassen, during a rare visit down to super featherweight.

This Friday sees a good show in suburban Brisbane as the OPBF Heavyweight and the Australian Light Welterweight titles are up for grabs at Mansfield Tavern in Mansfield, Queensland.
Towering heavyweights Colin Wilson, 34-23 (20), and Nathan Briggs, 19-5 (16), have fought twice already with Wilson taking both contests by knockout in 2005 and 2006.
For the rubber match, Wilson puts up his OPBF crown, won from Alex Leapai via split decision in June.
Ironically, Leapai won that belt from Briggs via eighth round knockout in November of last year.
33 year old slugger Briggs, who won the Aussie title in just his fourth pro contest in 2001 before losing the same during a first defense, is riding a three bout win streak and aside from the Leapai loss, has gone 8-1 since the second Wilson fight.
Before winning the OPBF crown, 36 year old southpaw Wilson, who has held the Australian crown on two previous occasions, dropped four straight contests and looked to be headed out the door and this third fight against Briggs is a must win for "Kid Coalminer".
Australian Light Welterweight Champion Chris McCullen, 11-1-1 (5), won that belt for a second time with a third round stoppage of John Cotterill, 22-5 (10), in March and the two will do it again on the bill at Mansfield Tavern this Friday. More...

Team Australia's last hope in boxing at the 2008 Olympics walked into a Russian buzzsaw yesterday as Anthony Little was put out of the games by Alexey Tishchenko.
The Perth lightweight was outclassed from the start by the 2004 Olympic Gold Medallist at super featherweight but things got a whole lot worse for Little when he was nailed flush by a right hand that impaired his vision for the rest of the way.
Little's power game was no match for Tischenko's finely honed skill and the man that many are tipping to win the Beijing Gold Medal cruised to an 11-3 victory after four rounds.
Australia's Cinderella hopes are crushed as all of the fighters from Down Under have been defeated with the 27 year old Little the only one to have made it into the second round of competition.

Yesterday at Worker's Gymnasium in Beijing, Australian super heavyweight Dan Behan suffered a referee stoppage at 0:49 of the first round as the team from Down Under has now completed their initial round of competition.
It's been a withering frame as every one of Team Australia's boxers, with the exception of one, has been ushered out of these Olympic Games.
Yesterday, Kazakhstan's Ruslan Myrsatayev went after Behan from the start and his heavy shelling strategy had an almost immediate effect as the Gladstone man was sent reeling from big shots, forcing a referee stoppage at 0:49 of the first round.
This leaves one man to carry the hopes and dreams of a nation on his shoulders but lightweight Anthony Little of Team Australia has the difficult job of facing the 2004 Olympic Gold Medallist at super featherweight, Russia's Alexey Tishchenko on Friday as the second round of competition commences.
Tishchenko is favored to win gold at Beijing at lightweight but Little's rough and tough style could put the Siberian on his heels if he can smother Tishchenko's offense with an inside attack.

The victory drought in Beijing is finally over for Team Australia as Western Australian lightweight Anthony Little outclassed Namibian boxer Julius Indongo today by a score of 14-2 but team mate Paul Fleming fell short in a hard fought featherweight clash with France's Khedafi Djelkhir
It wasn't pretty but Little managed to nullify the height and reach advantages enjoyed by the African, proving a hard target to hit while landing solid counters and generally out-hustling Indongo.
The Perth based 27 year old brought a good deal of experience to the table, having won the Chemistry Cup in Germany and Oceania Championships already this year as well as making it into the second round of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The 25 year old Indongo took Bronze at this year's AIBA African qualifying tournament but wasn't ready for the busy Australian.
Next up for Little is a much higher hurdle in the form of Russia's Alexey Tishchenko, the 2004 Olympic Gold Medallist at featherweight now campaigning as a lightweight, who outpointed Tunisian boxer Saifeddine Nejmaoui today by a score of 10-2.
Brisbane featherweight Paul Fleming took the fight to French opponent Khedafi Djelkhir earlier in the day and while the gritty southpaw ruled the first round, the European boxer adjusted and won the next three frames. More...

Day two of the Beijing Olympics proved as fruitless as day one for Team Australia as two more lads from Down Under were sent home without getting near a medal of any kind.
Team Captain Gerard O'Mahony had the experience of competing in the 2004 Olympics but lost a tough one at welterweight to Vitalie Grusac of Moldova while light welter Todd Kidd was badly outpointed by Morocco's Driss Moussaid.
29 year old O'Mahony of Canberra waged a gritty defensive battle against Grusac, using his impressive countering skills to keep the Moldovan honest but couldn't generate the offense necessary to win and suffered a 7-2 loss as a result.
23 year old Kidd was making his Olympic debut but the Caboolture man ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Moussaid as the experienced Moroccan campaigner painted the Aussie by a wide margin of 23-2, although much of Kidd's efforts over the first three frames seemed to be discounted by the judges.
Team Australia's ability to improve upon the five Olympic medals won since 1908 is getting dimmer but still to compete are super heavy Dan Beahan, heavyweight Brad Pitt, lightweight Anthony Little, featherweight Paul Fleming, bantamweight Luke Boyd and flyweight Stephen Sutherland.
Middleweight Jarrod Fletcher lost on day one of the competition to an opponent he beat just months ago in prior competition, Emilio Correa, by a score of 17-4.

It was a pretty good week for Australian boxing, but most of the action happened of a Wednesday night show at the Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, NSW, headlined by Anthony Mundine and supported by super prospect Billy Dib.
Mundine, who recently gave up the WBA Super Middleweight belt rather than to face Mikkel Kessler again, took on heavy-handed Tokyo based veteran Toshiharu Kaneyama, better known by his nickname of "Crazy Kim", over ten rounds.
Kim, a former longtime Japanese light middleweight titlist who recently moved up to win OPBF belts at super middle and light heavy, bid his time in the early rounds, studying the quicker Mundine until he lashed out in the third round with a perfect counter that shockingly floored "Choc".
Mundine wasn't seriously hurt but gave the big punching Kim a lot more respect afterward and concentrated on getting off his shots and not standing in front of his foe.
The strategy worked well for Mundine, who peppered the Japanese import with both hands while Kim attempted but failed to repeat his one shot success of the third round.
Kim showed a tremendous chin to go along with his massive heart in taking the best that one of the top super middles in the world had to offer but was outpointed after the ten rounds were over by wide margins of 99-91, 98-91 and 98-92.
Mundine, who will reportedly try to campaign as a middleweight in the future, improves to 33-3 (23), while 33 year old Crazy Kim drops to 28-5 (24). More...

We start this weekend's Asia report with a good show at the Coliseum in boxing mad Cebu City, Philippines where it was title fight fury in the lower weights on Saturday night.
The main event saw Rafael "El Torito" Concepcion, 11-2-1 (7), turn a maiden voyage outside his native Panama into a successful Philippines excursion by putting the first loss onto the record of local hero AJ "Bazooka" Banal, 17-1-1 (14), and win the Interim WBA Super Flyweight title in the process.
In a thrilling battle of southpaws, the stakes were raised considerably in the ninth when Banal lost a point for straying low but the real action took place in the tenth as Concepcion nailed his Filipino rival with a perfect right hand that forced Banal to take a knee while he was counted out at 2:35 of the tenth round.
The vacant WBO Oriental Bantamweight title was up for grabs on the undercard, but after less than six minutes of combat, local veteran Michael "Bruce Lee" Domingo, 36-14-2 (15), decided matters in brutal fashion as the 28 year old crushed Indonesia's Rivo Rengkung at just 0:46 of the second round.
20 year old light flyweight Milan Melindo, 16-0 (4), shed the prospect tag by winning the biggest fight of career with a twelve round unanimous decision over Panama's Carlos "Shanghai" Melo, 18-7 (2), that earned the Mandaue City man the WBA Intercontinental title. More...

There were two fight cards of consequence this weekend Down Under and we start on Friday's action in New South Wales where there was a high level cruiserweight clash in the Sydney suburb of Blacktown.
WBO Oriental Champion Lawrence Tauasa, 30-5-1 (17), won the 14th of his last 15 bouts and picked up the vacant PABA belt in the process by knocking out visiting Bolivian slugger Saul Farah, 32-6-2 (26), in the third round.
Farah, who saw an eight fight win streak go down the tubes, had failed to make weight, coming in eight pounds over the 200 pound cruiserweight limit and was unable to take possession of the titles had he won.
The hyper-busy South American had fought just two weeks ago in Bolivia and was engaging in his seventh bout this year after participating in 15 matches in 2007. More...

It was a massive night of fisticuffs last night Down Under and with so much action to choose from, it's difficult to know where to start!
But start we must and that takes us to the Sydney area where at the Catholic in Campbelltown, NSW, there was a big showdown at middleweight between IBO Champion Daniel Geale and challenger Geard Ajetovic.
Geale was coming off a masterful boxing performance last December against previously undefeated slugger Daniel "The Rock" Dawson to win the vacant IBO belt and but the Mt. Annan stylist was facing a tough challenge in this one.
Ajetovic, a native Serbian who has fought his entire career in England, had completed his last six bouts without a loss following a narrow disappointment to European Champ Christopher Canclaux in a non-title bout two years ago.
When the bout started, it was clear that Geale possessed the sharper skills and ring generalmanship, but the dangerous Ajetovic closed distance and badly the champion in the fifth round. More...

There was a good bill last night at the Central Coast Leagues Club in Gosford, NSW last night featuring the much anticipated return of the country's hottest prospect, lightweight William Kickett.
Returning after four months out due to falling through a window and injuring his right hand, 21 year old "Cool Willie" battered Filipino Jurland Ceniza, 6-7-1 (3), in a one-sided contest before the action was stopped at 2:58 of the third frame.
Only a professional since March of 2007, Kickett, 10-0 (5), has already won the Australian Super Feather title and went up to light welter where he defeated the far more experienced former two-time world featherweight title challenger Tommy Browne last December.
Able to fit into several weight classes competitively, Kickett's future appears to be filled with potential big domestic matchups but his rehabilitation from the accident will likely continue at least through one more bout.
American super journeyman Emmanuel Augustus was also on the bill and won his second consecutive bout since relocating to the Sydney area. More...

There wasn't a lot of action Down Under last night, but there were two important bouts, one each in New South Wales and Victoria.
Cruiserweight Lawrence Tauasa retained his IBF Australasian belt, needing only two rounds to bring the challenge of opponent Eduardo Jesus Oscar Rojas to a halt at the RSL Club in the Sydney suburb of Rooty Hill.
The 5 foot 9 inch tall Samoan Tauasa outweighted the Argentine import by nearly 4.5 kg and went through his journeyman challenger without much difficulty before producing a stoppage at 1:05 of the second frame.
Tauasa improves to 29-5-1 (16) and the former Australian Cruiser Champ has now won three bouts in a row at 91 kg following his three year stint as a heavyweight.
Rojas, 12-13-7 (6), had turned pro as a welterweight and the well-traveled 30 year old Buenos Aires man has faced such luminaries as Frederic Klose, Walter Dario Matthysse and Daniel Bruwer during his nine year career. More...

Friday night Down Under saw two important contests, the first of which took place at the Croatian Club in the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl and featured IBO Welterweight Champion Isaac "The Angel" Hlatswayo defeat challenger Robert Medley for the second time in less than six months.
The pair fought their initial bout last October In Penrith and Hlatswayo put on a clinic, dropping the previously unbeaten former Australian Light Middle titlist in the fifth before coasting to a wide points verdict, retaining the IBO belt for the first time.
This time the action was only slightly more competitive as the six foot tall Medley seemed to have improved but still was unable to solve Hlatswayo's edge in speed and aggression, despite a four inch height advantage.
Medley hit the canvas in the very first frame but battled back to impose his will at times afterward. The champion however, would not be denied and from the midway point on, Hlatswayo put the pedal to the metal and raked Medley with combinations, forcing a stoppage at 1:49 of the tenth frame. More...

Last night at The Enterainment Centre in Sydney, Australia, WBA Super Middleweight Champ Anthony Mundine was pushed very hard in a twelve round title defense by former Australian, IBF Pan Pacific and OPBF Light Middle titlist Nader Hamdan before pulling out the unanimous decision win.
Hamdan, 40-6 (18), spent the early part of the bout attacking Mundine's body and the champion made the challenger pay for the transgressions with sharp counter shots on the inside but that seemed to have very little effect on Hamdan.
As the contest wore on, Hamdan forced Mundine into countless pitched battles that saw both men dealing out and absorbing punishment along the ropes and the center of the ring.
The challenger relentlessly pursued Mundine but with perhaps the fastest hands in the division, "The Man" began to pull clear and win rounds as he beat Hamdan to the punch on most of the exchanges. More...

We start this week's Saturday night round-up at the Brandberge Arena in Halle an der Saale, Germany where European Light Heavyweight Champion Thomas Ulrich was shockingly knocked out by Ukrainian southpaw Yuri Barashian in the eighth round.
Barashian, 25-3 (17), had been fed a steady diet of largely record building opposition since losing an IBF Youth Light Heavy title contest to future world super middle title challenger Robert Stieglitz in 2003 and was not expected to defeat Ulrich.
Ulrich, 31-4 (21), was making the second defense of his third reign as European Champion and had twice challenged unsuccessfully for world titles, losing by decision to WBO boss Zsolt Erdei in 2006 and getting stopped by WBC titlist Tomasz Adamek in 2005.
But the German light heavy couldn't seem to fins the target against Barashian and the Russian body puncher hurt Ulrich in the middle rounds, canvassing the European titlist three times in the seventh before finishing the job in the eighth with a spearing left hook to the liver.
The undercard presented several big names on the Continent with southpaw cruiserweight slugger Alexander Alexeev, 14-0 (13), forcing a third round referee stoppage on American ex-heavyweight Talmadge Griffis, 24-8-3 (16), in defense of the WBO Intercontinental belt, while super middle prospect Dimitri Sartison, 22-0 (14), finished off Argentina's Pablo Daniel Zamora Nievas, 19-3-1 (13), in eight and former European light middle title challenger Lukas Konecny, 36-2 (18), stayed busy with a second round knockout of Belgium based Zaire man Kimfuta Makussu, 10-12 (3). Last night at the Istora Bung Karno Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia, WBA Featherweight Champion Chris John kept his title when Panama's Roinet Caballero could not answer the bell for the eighth round. Afterward, John resumed his campaign to lure Manny Pacquiao into the ring.
Round one: John coming forward behind the jab, but Caballero moving well and is successful with left hands to the body and counter rights to the head. Near the end of the frame, Caballero lands a stiff right hand and John tries to step up the pace, cornering Caballero but unable to do much before the bell sounds.
Round two: John very active behind the jab but Caballero fighting him back with aggressive counters and body shots. John finally strikes the target with a sharp jab, right hand combination. Caballero tries to hold John back with counters but the champion starts to time his shots well, winning a quick exchange on the inside and causing the Panamanian to fall back.
The skirmishes continue to mount as John times a right over a missed Caballero jab. Caballero looks to maintain distance as the pair trade left hooks. John keeps pressing the action and lunges inside with a body, head, body combination. Caballero lands a right hand over top a John jab and the challenger begins to come forward, enjoying some success to the body but eating some leather in the process. The end of the second devolves into a brawl with many missed wild punches until John nails Caballero with a stiff jab at the bell.
Round three: Caballero holds the center of the ring by circling the champion but is slowly forced back and after missing a big shot is countered with three quick left hands to the body and head. Caballero fights back with a two handed flurry to the body but is soon forced back again when John finds range with the jab. More...

There were two good cards Down Under last night with bills in suburbs of both Sydney and Melbourne, featuring and IBO championship fight and two Australian title bouts.
At the Auburn RSL Club in Auburn, NSW, ex-IBF/IBO Flyweight Champion Vic Darchinyan returned to the ring for the first time since suffering a shocking knockout loss to heavy underdog Nonito Donaire in July and captured the IBO Super Flyweight title in the process.
Darchinyan, 29-1 (23), was made to work by opponent Federico Catubay, 20-14-3 (11), a former Filipino Flyweight titlist. Catubay didn't have the skills to match the former world champion punch for punch but made up for it through sheer toughness and an iron chin.
The power of Darchinyan began to tell as early as the seventh when he dropped Catubay for an eight count. The Filipino made it back up and got his second wind but the harsh head and body attack from Darchinyan produced another knockdown in the eleventh frame. More...

Friday night saw three good cards across Oz, with visitor Isaac Hlatshwayo emerging as the big winner.
The 30 year old world class South African traveled to the Panthers Club in Penrith in order to place his IBO Welterweight crown at risk against local hero Robert Medley.
Medley went into the fight with 18 wins against no losses and as a former Australian Light Middle titlist who had gone down a division to pick up the IBF Australasian/IBO Asia Pacific titles.
But wins earlier this year against Kaiser Mabuza and Somchai Nakbalee didn't prepare him for the highly polished skills possessed by Hlatshwayo, a fighter with wins at lightweight over Cassius Baloyi, Nate Campbell, Aldo Rios and Phillip N'dou. More...
