Ringside Boxing Report: Shane Mosley - Fernando Vargas

By Mark DeSisto July 16th, 2006 All Ringside Boxing

The speed of Shane Mosley was simply too much for Fernando Vargas on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mosley was just waiting for an opening in the sixth round before planting a lightning left hook square on the chin of "El Feroz" , who fell backwards on the canvas, and stumbled twice before barely beating the ten count of referee Kenny Bayless. With Vargas on shaky legs, Mosley followed up with a barrage of punches, giving Bayless no choice but to stop the bout, granting Mosley his second TKO victory over Vargas at 2:38 of round 6.

Vargas appeared a bit slower than his first encounter with Mosley back in February, and Mosley's speed and movement never really allowed Vargas into the fight as all 3 judges had Mosley winning every round at the time of the stoppage. Vargas may have left too much of
himself in his well-documented battle with the scales to meet the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds, yet Vargas made no excuses and wouldn't take anything away from Mosley's performance. Mosley's vaunted right hand was his key punch in the first fight and it appears Vargas had prepared for that and was able to avoid that punch in this fight. Mosley then decided to change tactics. The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada was buzzing with more pre-weekend energy than usual on Friday in anticipation of Saturday's rematch between two of this generation's top boxers, Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas. The two Southern Californian based fighters looked ready to go and in tremendous shape on the scales with Vargas coming in at the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds, and Mosley tipping the scales at 153 pounds. Ringside Boxing Report: Vic Darchinyan - Luis Maldonado

Australian flyweight king Vic Darchinyan made the most of his sudden opportunity as the headliner for Showtime boxing on Saturday night at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Darchinyan used his phenomemal punching power to overwhelm tough Mexican Luis Maldonado and force referee Joe Cortez to halt the bout at 1:38 of round 8.

The IBF/IBO Flyweight Title bout was originally scheduled as an undercard to the main event between between Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo until Castillo failed to make the weight limit, cancelling their much anticipated fight. The promoters decided the show must go on and the main event was suddenly between the two undefeated 112 pounders. More...

Castillo Won’t Be Boxing Corrales For Third Time!

By Mark DeSisto June 3rd, 2006 All Boxing Articles

Jose Luis Castillo proved again that his lightweight days are behind him by not even coming close to making the lightweight limit of 135 lbs today at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Castillo weighed in at 139.5 pounds both times he was weighed over a 2 hour period for the highly anticipated rubber match with WBC lightweight title holder Diego Corrales, who came in right on the limit at 135lbs.

After some careful thought and discussion amongst the Corrales camp and Castillo promoter Bob Arum, the decision was made to call off the fight. The Corrales camp had understandable concern that their fighter could be at risk fighting the bigger Castillo and didn't want a repeat of the devastating knockout Corrales suffered during their second match, when Castillo came in over the limit at 138.5 lbs. Ringside Boxing Report: Oscar De La Hoya - Ricardo Mayorga

Making his first ring appearance in almost two years, Oscar De La Hoya forced referee Jay Nady to step in at 1:25 of the sixth round after bombarding Ricardo Mayorga with a flurry of punches for the TKO victory last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, winning the WBC Light Middleweight title in the process. De La Hoya set the tone by dropping Mayorga within the first minute of the fight with a devastating left hook, leaving a shocked "El Matador" on the canvas and the thirteen thousand plus crowd raised the roof of the venue with a deafening roar. De La Hoya went on to stun the Nicaraguan again during the first round and the amazing possibility of an early stoppage of the granite chinned Mayorga entered the minds of viewers but the hardened Central American fighter weathered the storm. Mayweather Jr. Captures IBF Welterweight Belt!

The Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada was the host of Saturday night?s mega fight between welterweight speedsters Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Zab Judah. The Top Rank promoted contest actually lived up to it?s hype as it was competitive early on until the world?s best boxer, Floyd Mayweather, took over in the mid rounds to earn a 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109 unanimous decision . Adding a little spice to the bout was a blatant low blow by Judah, followed by smash to the back of Mayweather's head late in the tenth, touching off an incident that saw forty people b! rawling the ring, witnessed by millions across the world on HBO PPV. Guilty Boxing presented "Guilty Fight Night" at the South Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Friday Night, with the main event a ten round lightweight contest between prospect Jairo Ramirez of San Diego, CA, and Russell "Stoner" Jones of Denver, CO. Ghanian native Jones came in as the more experienced man, having lost decisions to world class fighters such as Joel Casamayor and Zahir Raheem. Ramirez was the more active fighter and simply outworked his tentative opponent to score a 99-91 unanimous decision on all three judges' scorecards. More...

Medina earns 6TH IBF Title Shot!

Guilty Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions teamed up to provide the local boxing fanatics with an action-packed Friday night of boxing at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main event was an IBF Super Featherweight Title Eliminator between Tijuana native Manuel Medina and Argentinean tough guy Javier Alvarez. Medina’s world class experience, boxing skills, and work rate proved far too much in a lopsided 118-110 (twice), 119-109 unanimous decision over Alvarez.

Alvarez seemed a little too relaxed and didn’t engage nearly enough in the early rounds as Medina employed his boxing lesson. Medina rarely neglected his effective jab and worked smooth combinations up and down on Alvarez, quickly getting out of harms way before Alvarez could fire back. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Shane Mosley - Fernando Vargas

By Mark DeSisto March 1st, 2006 All Ringside Boxing

This past Saturday, the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada hosted what turned out to be a fantastic fight between Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas. To the dismay of fight fans in attendance and pay per viewers around the world, referee Joe Cortez was forced to halt the bout prematurely at 1:22 of the tenth round due to Vargas' grossly swollen and completely shut left eye. Cortez received no real arguments for the justified stoppage. The 154 pound non-title bout between the two highly regarded former champions had the over 9000 people in attendance brewing with anticipation over just how much these two warriors had left in the tank and almost immediately in round one, we found out they came to fight.

Vargas landed his patented, lead straight right early to ignite cheers from his huge fan base, but Mosley fired back and landed two solid rights, doing enough to win the round in the eyes of two of the three judges scoring the bout. The initial damage that would eventually end the fight was already in place, as Vargas had a surprising welt over his left eye, More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Juan Lazcano - Ben Tackie

In a nice warm up for tomorrow night's Mosley-Vargas showdown, top ranked light welterweight Juan Lazcano pounded out a unanimous ten round decision over Ben Tackie at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. All three judges scored the entertaining scrap 98-92, or eight rounds to two for Lazcano. What probably

stood out to those in attendance by fight's end on the Golden Boy Promotions card, was the world class chin of Ghanian Ben Tackie. Thirty two year old Tackie has been the distance with some of world's best 140 pounders, such as Ricky Hatton and Kostya Tszyu, and has now never been stopped in a 34 professional bouts.

El Paso native Lazcano started out well in round one, establishing an effective jab and putting together a few combinations to easily take the opening round. Round two started the same but Tackie appeared to hurt Lazcano and had him reeling backwards with relentless pressure in the last 30 seconds of the round, enough for two judges to give the round to Tackie. Ringside Boxing Report: Antonio Margarito - Manuel Gomez

This past Saturday at the Aladdin Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Antonio Margarito continued to back up his claim that he is ready for anyone (read: Floyd Mayweather) in boxing’s welterweight division. Many knowledgeable boxing observers figured a well prepared Manuel “Shotgun” Gomez to at least give the ever improving Margarito a few trying moments in the squared circle but that never materialized and this bout was over in a mere seventy four seconds. The hard punching Gomez came out aggressive as he had promised, with a few jabs and some wild whipping left hooks, but certainly fell short in the defense department and left himself wide open to the hard punching WBO Welterweight titlist Margarito. Revenge was in order for last nights HBO PPV mega rematch between super featherweight stars Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales. The relentless power punching “Pacman” was simply not going to be denied, despite the heroic efforts of “El Terrible” Morales. The Filipino phenom wore down the Mexican legend and stopped him under a barrage of punches at 2:33 of the tenth

round. A left cross to the side of Morales' head put him down for the first legitimate knockdown of his career. The always game Morales rose at the count of nine, but there was no way Pacquiao was going to let "El Terrible" off the hook, and bombarded him with punches against the ropes, forcing Morales to the canvas again, and prompting referee Kenny Bayless to wave off the fight.

Boxing fans in attendance at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada and pay per viewers around the world were treated to a sequel that easily lived up to its hype. This was simply two of boxing’s best warriors giving everything they had, much to the delight of the 14,618 roaring fans in attendance. More...

The weigh-in for tonights highly anticipated super featherweight rematch between two of boxing’s best, Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao, was held at the beautiful Wynn Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The atmosphere was electric, as excited and vocal fans were cheering for both fighters. Morales of Tijuana, Mexico, looked a little gaunt as he often does at these events, but came in 130 lbs on the nose, before jumping off the scale and quickly replenishing some fluids. Philippine hero Pacquiao came in at a ripped 128.5 lbs, ready to go. Fight fans, the countdown is on! The main undercard is also likely to provide an explosive rematch between super flyweights Martin Castillo of Mexico, and Venezuela’s Alexander Munoz. WBA Super Flyweight champ Castillo came in at 114.5 lbs, while his opponent that he took the title from, Munoz, came in at the super flyweight limit of 115lbs. More...

This past Saturday night the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV hosted “No Respect”, the much anticipated middleweight championship rematch between Jermain Taylor and Bernard Hopkins. Unfortunately for those in attendance, and particularly, those paying for the fight on PPV at home, there was simply too much respect between the fighters to even surpass the average standards of their first contest. The flow of the bout and the judges scoring of the fight was quite similar to the first one pairing between the two middleweights, a questionable decision win for Jermain Taylor. More...

Headlining the Gary Shaw Productions - Showtime televised card last night from Cesar's Tahoe in Reno, Nevada was the much awaited Jeff Lacy - Scott Pemberton IBF/IBO world title fight. The reigning champion from Florida came into the contest with a pristine record and had yet to be seriously troubled in any of his fights thus far. After twelve years as a professional, thirty eight year old Pemberton had finally earned his chance for a world title and

vowed to make the most of the opportunity.

Once the bell rang, Lacy constantly came forward, working both up and down on the challenger, who didn't have the strength or the endurance to compete as Pemberton was visibly gassed after surviving the first round. More...

Gary Shaw Promotions coupled with Caesar’s Hotel & Casino in beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada presented a couple of fiery world title fights last night that were aired live in the US by Showtime. Mexico City’s IBF Bantamweight Champion Rafael Marquez put his belt on the line against speedy South African IBO champion Silence Mabuza. The intensely heavy handed Marquez came into the matchup riding a thirteen fight win streak against the best that the bantamweight division has to offer. Mabuza had yet to lose a contest since turning professional in 1999 and had defended the IBO belt six times but aside from turning back former WBO titlist Cruz Carbajal in his most recent outing, "African Spice" hadn't really set foot against the type of world class competition that Marquez has been largely facing for the last four years.
