Do the Math: "Iceman" Scully Destined To Be A Great Boxer And Humble Man
Not many 16 year olds look forward to taking their final accounting exams. Usually because of its tedious use of numbers, it is hard to get excited about accounting at age 16. How many of us at that age have said that we want to be an accountant for the rest of our lives? Nothing against accountants, but when you're in high school, it does not rank up there as a fun or desirable career choice.
John “Iceman” Scully was no different. At age 16, when it came time to get ready for his final examination in accounting, he did not even study for it. So he knew he would not do well on the test. Then again, he did not care if he did well on it. Somehow, deep down inside, he knew accounting would not be in his future. As easy as it is for a 16 year old to say they know what they might want to do for the rest of their lives, The “Iceman” knew he would be the exception. He vowed to trade in his accounting courses for a pair of boxing gloves. More...

Several boxers were knocked out on Monday night at Ontario, California's Doubletree Hotel, entertaining the 1,113 fans who attended the evening’s fight card. One losing boxer that was not knocked out, spent much of his fight trying to taunt his opponent. |
Another losing boxer that managed to stay on his feet actually butted his head into his opponent. Indeed, that added to all the drama that surrounded Thompson Promotion’s "Path to Glory".
The evening’s card commenced with a four round bout between two junior welterweights – Carlos "Michoacano" Martinez of Miraloma, CA against Felipe Campana of Tijuana, Mexico. For three rounds, this was a very sloppy fight. Neither boxer could maintain their composure. Every landed hit seemed reckless, and lacked any legitimate body control. Early in the first round, the fight was so sloppy that Campana had a cut above his right eye. Campana attempted to respond to that cut with a head butt to Martinez in the third. The referee stopped the fight at that point. Per California State Commission rules, a fight where there is a head butt before the fourth round of a four round fight will result in a technical draw – which was the ultimate outcome in this fight, with Campana's third round head butt. Martinez remains undefeated at 1-0-1, while Campana is 2-3-3(1), More...

The "Golden Boy" and "El Matador" Turn Beverly Hills Press Conference Into A "Danger Zone".
If you want to see fireworks, you don’t have to wait until the Fourth of July. Nor do you have to wait until Cinco de Mayo, when Las Vegas will be lit up by a battle of two charismatic welterweights in a fight entitled "Danger Zone." Yesterday in Beverly Hills, CA there was an early display of what will go on in the ring when Oscar De La Hoya, 37-4 (29), met his next, and perhaps final, opponent in Ricardo Mayorga, 27-5-1 (22), at a press conference.
Fireworks were indeed on the menu yesterday at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel as a press conference that combined Golden Boy Promotions, a true street fighter from Nicaragua, and the ever-so affable Don King took place. Wearing a colorful jean jacket, a tie with a likeness of the American flag and carrying three additional flags (American, Nicaraguan and Mexican) in each hand, King definitely brought a sense of the dramatic to the event. Call it "Red Friday". On a dry yet breezy Friday evening at the Casino Morongo Resort, just outside Palm Springs in Cabazon, CA, approximately 1,000 fans filled the reservation's boxing arena, only to witness each winner hail from the red corner. A fitting color considering two boxers drew blood just before succumbing to the winner. While it |
may have been a runaway night for the red corner, the seven scheduled bouts, promoted by Two Feathers Productions, provided plenty of entertainment and parity for boxing fans who traveled to the venue, located on the Morongo Indian Reservation.
“The fighters appear to be very evenly matched tonight," stated local heavyweight boxing star Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola. "All the fighters here are good and the fans should enjoy these bouts." Indeed, "The Nightmare" was on point about the matchups that were anything but a bad dream. Of the seven scheduled bouts, only two ended in a knockout. Yet, even in both of those fights, the losing boxer held his own, stood his ground, and demonstrated stellar physical and mental toughness. More...

| It was the perfect day off in California; a pleasant afternoon at the beach, with Hawaiian barbecue, a few Coronas, beautiful women and harmonic melodies. In short, a celebration of life. Indeed, it was a celebration as the WBO celebrated the title winning effort of Daniel Ponce De Leon, 27-1 (25), and gave five local boxing gyms the day off. Yesterday, at downtown Long Beach’s Hawaiian BBQ & Fish, |
