Isn't this interesting: In my opinion her voice sounds a little bit like Ingrid Bergman's in this clip! I think that's swedish accent? I love Ingrid's voice.

The film is based on a novel "The Lady of the Camellias" A.K.A. "Camille" in English (French: "La Dame aux camélias"). It was written by Alexandre Dumas, fils (son of the Alexandre Dumas who wrote "The Count of Monte Cristo" etc.). The novel was first published in 1848, and was later adapted for the stage. It was also made into an opera called "La Traviata". The character Marguerite Gautier is based on Marie Duplessis, the real life lover of the author.

There is no comparison with Greta Garbo and actresses today. She was an artist; not just an actress. This is especially true in her superb performance here from beginning to end. This entire picture is an artistic statement in every way. My favorite part is the scene with Lionel Barrymore where she says 'I will make my love hate me'. Isn't this story based on some classical theme from opera? Thanks for posting.

Its the most poetic and perfect performance. But as I watch the phoniness of the trailer itself I marvel that she was able to project such realism in her roles, it was such an artificial time. Artists like her were fighting an uphill battle.

I saw this film when I was in first year high school. Robert Taylor was just so dashing and debonair! And Greta Garbo was wonderful, too!
