Ukraine: Former WBA champ Nikolai Valuev visits Simferopol days before referendum

Two-time WBA heavyweight boxing champion Nikolai Valuev spoke about the upcoming referendum in Crimea in Simferopol on Thursday. The boxing superstar emphasised problems exist in Crimean society but assured the local population Crimea will be treated with respect and dignity if it becomes part of the Russian Federation.

Valuev gave the interview as he took a stroll along the streets of central Simferopol, where he was joined by fans and passers-by, who had their photograph taken with the star. He also signed autographs and chatted openly with locals and journalists alike.

The Crimean referendum is scheduled for Sunday 16.
