Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity

Uploaded by: ChallengingMedia

Video Stream Description:
http://www.mediaed.org
While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cul
tural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. at the dawn of the 21st century. In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Ark
ansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity. This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture
of contemporary masculinity.

Ack! You got it all ... ( 1 week ago by BeatBuddy)
Ack! You got it all backwards! Don't get me started.
Women are feminine, ... ( 1 week ago by MaryLovesJoseph)
Women are feminine, not effeminate, which is a term used to describe feminized men. No living organism is helpless or defenseless. We all have some sort of defense mechanism that varies according to physical strength/abilities. What I'm saying is that women should go back to being feminine/gentle and loving and stop feeling ashamed of being a woman. It is against our nature to be rough.
Ah, master ... ( 1 week ago by s031720)
Ah, master suppression techniques, how beautiful are they not when put to use by the supposedly righteous ones? To throw suspicion by claims of association and also a psychological claim that I am projecting. You dear sir, are not worthy of discussion.
I have never met a ... ( 1 week ago by BeatBuddy)
I have never met a projectionist who admits to projecting. In this sense they are comparable to homophobes and racists; they never own up to it.
there's an insane ... ( 1 week ago by laica2003)
there's an insane amount of ppl who still have that mentality, men and women. who believe that to be feared is to be respected. women are feeling victorious when they put up a tough demeanor and are able to dominate the other women AND especially the men around them. its crazy and makes me wonder if there will ever be a balance
You ask a tough, ... ( 1 week ago by BeatBuddy)
You ask a tough, but interesting question. My theory is that most women who tend to manipulate feel weak, largely having to do with cultural male dominionism. That's the impression I got when I invited members of the Rape and Assault Committee, and some of the women it shelters, to speak at an organization of men I belonged to.
Strawman approach? ... ( 6 days ago by Jojiro101)
Strawman approach? Men can be discriminated, but that is only due to the image they present of themselves. Women aren't creating a straw-man that is easy to knock down. Indeed, they are merely trying to promote less macho, manly, and ultimately OK violence. Also, feminism doesn't want either. It isn't just one goal.
Each woman obviously has their own agenda. I'm sure there are examples of male-bashing females out there, just as there are those rooting for equality, and everything in between.
You know, grand ... ( 6 days ago by Jojiro101)
You know, grand philosophy just makes your case weaker. I do agree that presenting exceptions and arguing that the oppressor is oppressed is wrong in this case, but saying that it is not worthy of discussion amounts to nothing, at least debate-wise.
Not so at all. ... ( 6 days ago by s031720)
Not so at all. Radical feminism theory is based on a gynocentric view of masculinity. This is a typical strawman approach. You can see it in any of the major equalityissues presented today. I never talk of opression, i dont believe there is any genderbased opression. I certainly havent claimed men are beeing opressed. I definately find this a worthy topic, i just dont find ppl using domination techniques worthy to discuss with. Are you saying that men can only be discriminated by themselv

Having a tough guy ... ( 5 days ago by DJBruceWayne)
Having a tough guy front is a PRIMAL/NATURAL instinct. Humans complex thought processes have manipulated this instinct into what we call violence, murder, rape, misogyny etc...Because Humans have a conscious, factors of violence are amplified, hence why Humans are at the top of the food chain. But male "hyper-masculinity" is a learned behavioral instinct. An evolutionary adaptation to humanoid social conditions. Culture only sets the degree for male aggressiveness.
These statistics ... ( 4 days ago by McConsumer)
These statistics may be true, but the link between media and these statistics has not been shown. I would suggest that the media has fed a need. Have there not always been violent and gentle men? I do not dispute that the media has a very real impact on how we see ourselves, but these images have grown from example. It is not right to say that the media caused it because; people won't buy what they don't like. Plus, Bruce Lee is awesome. Is he awesome because I have been programmed to think so?
Sorry. The second ... ( 4 days ago by Jojiro101)
Sorry. The second post was responding to another person. The first one was the reply to your post. So...all that stuff about being worthy and oppression is not directed at you. But about the gynocentric view: sure, it is used, but it is used justly because the view of the people who are already at an advantage isn't useful in equality issues.
It is not used ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
It is not used justly. If your aim is equality, you can not base it on an unequal view, you must view women and men at the same level of complexity, empathy. But instead radical feminism is stereotyping men and using it as a leverage to gain political power and lobbying for unjust legislation. Just one of many examples from sweden: An indoorclimbing club had complaints that the "boys" where to loud, stealing "space" from the girls. Thus a girl-only day was introduced. (coninued)
What do we learn ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
What do we learn from this? 1. Feminsts have more power than most of us. Name any other individual who could change whole organisations to their own advantage. 2. Stereotyping. The truth of the matter is that SOME boys where loud, not all. And some girls where loud to, but made invisible because it was not benefitial. 3. The one suffering from this whole situation where the not-so-loud boys (ie the majority of the boys), who did not gain access to the change that where supposed to help the
"not-so-loud" ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
"not-so-loud" persons. This feministic concept of giving people characteristics based on gender is direct contraproductive if you want to achieve equality. Furthermore, if this concept is backed by a gynocentric view, wich it always is, you will get a situation where females are always portrayed as good, and male are always portrayed as bad. This is sexism. We also get this situation where females get. cred for their sucess, but can blaim their failures on men, and the opposite for men,
..the opposite for ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
..the opposite for men, where men do not get credit for their success but shall take responsibility for their failurs. This is ofcourse extremly unjust, in relation to genderroles for instance, there is this view that women are socialised (ie victims) of their genderroles, whereas men are responsible (ie perpetrators) for theirs. Not to mention the downplay of how bad the male genderrole is for the male, and how benefitial it is for the women, a downplay needed to create the artificial...
and forced view ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
and forced view that men are opressors and women is opressed. Once again, this it not a belief that i share. This opressed/opressor theory is mainly to be able to fit in feministic theory with marxist theory, and it also useuful to gain political leverage. Feminist political power is based on exploiting the genderroles, mainly "the woman as a victim" and the "man as the saviour/shining knight". Thats why many feminist (not all, not the once truly wanting equality) play the victim card.
Exploiting ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
Exploiting genderroles is not really combating them, is it? No, instead they are actually strengthening some of the more beneficial ones, for instance "the woman as a victim". Radical feminism is a victimideology, and thats not juste, and its definately not good for equality. And in the long run its not good for the empowerment of neither men nor women. It also generates a lot of hate and anger on both "sides" of this "genderwar", that in itself is just a theoretical construct.
Genderroles to me, ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
Genderroles to me, where never meant to be beneficial to the individual, but to ensure that society as a whole would survive, at the cost of the individual. It was a social contract, a division of labour to ensure reproduction, the empowerment or/and fullfillment and meaningful lives for the individual was secondary to survival. Only in modern times, thanks to political stability and technical provess, we are starting to find the next stage, individuality, possible and long needed.
And ever since, ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
And ever since, males have been paying the greatest cost of this genderroled based system, we have died, been mutilated, and suffered to ensure survival of society. This way of viewing men as disposable, is internalised into the structures of modern society aswell, so we are still suffering. And females have played their part as well, and it have cost them aswell, but in a diffrent way.
All in all, im ... ( 4 days ago by s031720)
All in all, im advocating a more loving equalitywork, not this hateful, fearful, angry one that is dominating today. With love we can build a loving and equal society, with hate, fear and anger nothing good can be achieved. I think it is as simple as that. The idea of the battle of the sexes for instance, is totaly absurd to me. And when I compare most feminist theory with women and men in my life it just dosent make sense. I dont think it does to anyone. So why let it define equality for us?
The point is that ... ( 1 day ago by trace0470)
The point is that boys/men are programmed at an early age to hide emotion, put on a front and pretend they have it all together and are powerful. What a sad state to have that message burned into their brains. Men are capable of intense emotion and love and it is a shame they are taught that's not cool..GET OUT OF THE MAN BOX
