Hi Truemartian! I just wanted to let you know that you have helped me get a great start on my astronomical journey. I obtained a planisphere for Christmas and have been practicing with it for quite some time now, and I love astronomy more and more each day. I will be starting my freshman year of college soon and plan on majoring in physics/astronomy, and I couldn't be more excited. Keep up the great work my friend, you are a fantastic teacher!

Thank you so much! I'll save a wish for you in the upcoming Perseid meteor shower to wish you the best in your college quest.

I'm begging someone to give me a set of coordinates or chart so I can image it. There are thousands of amateurs out there capable of tracking it. So far none of them are reporting anything out of place up there. Apparently it dosent exist. I've certainly got the capability to track it myself. Especially since I just tracked down Pluto a few weeks ago.

lataest i heard was its southern hemiphere until 2009...but have heard that people have taken pics toward sun [with it blocked out] & they can see it beneath & to the left....!!!! who knows !
If thats true then ... ( 1 month ago by truemartian)
If thats true then the SOHO satellite should have already picked it up? Its impossible to see a planet if its that close to the sun. If it is visible so near it would have to be on the far side of the solar system and would only be a "star" visible during a total eclipse. The last total eclipse occured in Mongolia(northern hemisphere). I still have not heard any amateur reports that state anything unusual appeared in the southern sky.

Greetings truemartian. Your videos are very helpful and interesting. I know very little about telescope/binoculars but seriously thinking of purchasing a Orion SkyQuest XT8. I heard someone mention that many astro binoculars are comparable to telescopes. If so, what magnification & lens diameter would give me the same viewing capabilities as the XT8 and what brand would you recommend? Thanks and hope to hear from your very soon. Peace.
Only a pair of ... ( 1 month ago by truemartian)
Only a pair of binoculars the same diameter as an XT8 would have the same capabilities. The reason we build large telescopes is because resolution increases with size. You can compliment your telescope and astronomical experience with a minimum of 10X50 or 10X60 binos.

cool. what size scope did you use? mine is small and cheep, only couple hundred, but I have a blast. I have taken out my scope past few nights to see jupiter. I can clearly see the 4 moons Callisto, Io, ganymede, europe. however, as I zoom in closer to jupiter I see another moon that I dont know. its real close. it was about 3 oclock and Io, the closest "big" moon is about 11 oclock. do you know which moon this is? or am i seeing something diffrent? I used a 10mm and 4mm eyepeice f=700mm d=60mm
You are probably ... ( 3 weeks ago by truemartian)
You are probably seeing a background star. Jupiter only has 4 moons visible in backyard telescopes. All the rest of its 63 moons are small and asteroid like.

How would you compare, say a 4.7 inch refractor, to an 8 inch dobsonian reflector? I am mostly interested in planetary and lunar viewing. In fact, what is a good rule of thumb in general when comparing the two?
I've never compared ... ( 3 weeks ago by truemartian)
I've never compared an 8 with a 4 but I do have a 4 and a 10. In the 4 the Orion nebula is just a fuzzy patch of light surrounding its central stars. In the 10 the nebula actually begins to take shape like its pictures and tendrils of gas become visible. In the 4 individual stars are barely resolved in M13, in the 10 it looks like someone dropped a pile of diamonds in the sky.
Well then, how ... ( 3 weeks ago by Pingletons)
Well then, how would you compare a 120mm refractor to a 130mm reflector for planetary viewing?

A 10mm difference is not significant.
