Video Stream Description:
DigInfo - http://movie.diginfo.tv - Kyowa Electronic Instruments showed their Strain Gauge at STC at Tokyo Big Sight. When designing new structures engineers must take into account not only the materials, dimensions and weight but also the the strength relative to the amount of stress that will be applied to the structure. Kyowa has developed a range of gauges to measure this stress. The strain gauge is used to measure resistance in a material, when the material expands and contracts the strain gauge can measure the resistance and then transmit it to the data logger. The data logger can measure 30 channels of information by itself and up to 1000 channels of data when connected to external scanners. The strain gauge sensor can be used independantly or inserted as an element in many different systems. For example, if placed in a scale it can be used to measure weight, it can also be used to measure pressure or the displacement of materials.
The strain gauges can be used in many other fields, such as testing the strength of wheelchairs, the shearing stress when crash testing passenger jets, measuring the concentration of vapour in jet engines and the growth rate of fruit and vegetables.
