kevin rooney was a great trainer of a great boxer. Don King wormed his way in and the rest is history. Still, if you look at 85-89 you can say Tyson in many ways is the greatest heavyweight ever. Tyson of that period would have torn through Joe Louis, Marciano, Frazier, Foeman, even Ali. Or whoever you pick. The Tyson of that period was absolutely awesome.
i mean but cus just wanted him to be champ then, he knew he was old and dying, you can't really fault the man for wanting to experience that greatness one more time, his brushes w/ greatness were very fleeting in his early life and he saw in tyson a way to get it back, i mean he's stkll the loving figure and i think he truly loved tyson but it started cos of what tyson could bring him plus cus knew that displining a guy like mike, he could run away or it might take five years to make him champ
this man is pretty much right, i don't think rooney was as complicit, i think he was just doing what cus asked him to do, but still, atlas is the one who tried to actually show mike how to be a class fucking citizen and then cus got mad about his methods, which to anyone who knows the story, they were pretty extreme but how is atlas gonna stand up physically to fucking tyson, he had to use a gun to make the fucking point, he was trying to scare tyson straight, a tactic that works better thanmost
this country music at the beginning is a piss-take.lol rooney isnt even from the south. he's a new yorker - broklin
Holy shit Kevin has aged like 25 years in 5 years...LOL
@moh508th lets not get carried away lol.
mike tyson, made a real mistake by firin kevin rooney, as a trainer. i highly respect mr rooney.
omg he looks like cus!!! crazy
if you do your research you'll know that he was in his teens when he started to go off the rails only for d'amato and rooney to stand there and shrug their shoulders...their eyes were on the prize, nothing else mattered...the rest is history
Mike was a mental midget, to this day despite what Don King did to him, he's still brainwashed with his bullshit, to this day he think rooney was a slave master.
mike could have been the greatest boxer of all time,i guess his inner demons just got the best of him.
I know about the Teddy Atlas incident and I think Teddy was just trying to scare Mike straight. I seriously doubt Teddy would have actually shot Mike in the head. Teddy's actions were not right and his concerns should have been solved in a better way. Mike was young then and so was Teddy. Besides how would you react in you heard your teenage niece was sexually harassed by Mike? I'm sure Teddy's niece made it sound worse than it really was.
If not, he probably could have reconciled with Teddy Atlas. He would have been a good back up if Rooney was not available.
hmm i think it was too late by then, He should of sucked it up after he lost to Buster Douglas. By the time he got to Holyfield, Tyson and Rooney drifted 8 years apart, if he went back to Rooney after Douglas, i think Tyson would of turned his life around, he went to prison 2 years after he fought Douglas. idk Rooney seems like the kinda guy who gives people a second chance, but he was busy training Pazienza, idk Tyson just fudged his career big time, but he still was amazing in his prime.
Mike should have sucked up his ego and rehired Rooney after he lost to Holyfield the first time. Rooney certainly would not have allowed Tyson to rematch Holyfield until he was good and ready.
Very good interview, excellent work!
Mike should of just fucking stayed with Rooney, he lost his roots, the only trainer who knew him since the beginning, and his mind. I'm sure they could of worked out the money situation, lol ends up leaving the people who care about him for Don King, go figure. . . such a fucking shame, but Rooney trained Pazienza since 88 who did very well even with a broken neck, and he has trained this other guy, not kolon, some other white guy who fights with the peek-a-boo i can't remember his name sorry.
nah Cus was more than just his trianer, he was a mentor, and the only person he trusted, and it is a fact Cus was Tysons legal guardian at age 13-till he passed away. Watch "Tyson" by Toback, you'll see how Cus changed his mentality.
Teddy Atlas.
who was the guy who took tyson to the gym and put a gun to his head?
he was tyson's trainer not his father boxing is a business first and tyson is an adult his choices were his own.
It would be awesome if Kevin Rooney finds a future superstar and fulfills what Mike Tyson could have been.
Actually Tysn said she came on to him we dont know the story so leave it alone.
Do Mike and Rooney speak now? It'll be great if they teamed up and became trainers or even better if they organized a Tyson comeback.
It's weird how much different he looks . He's now the current Cus D'amato
