Had Marciano fought ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
Had Marciano fought around the turn of last century, he would not have fought blacks for the title either. It was a tradition. Johnson pretty much did the same. Louis too for almost ten years.
sorry jeffries was ... ( 1 month ago by guru77771)
sorry jeffries was scared of possibly losing the title to a black man(johnson) we all know he fought blacks before he one the title just like john l . sullivan was scared of losing the title to peter jackson. i agree he was not scared of johnson as a man but he was scared that if for whatever reason he lost he would disgrace the white race and that is a fact. anybody can lose on a bad day sick or fluke injury and he was scared that a black could win thw title. a true champion fights all opponent
well burns broke ... ( 1 month ago by guru77771)
well burns broke the tradition at that time and with marciano intergity which can not be challenged and his heart he would have done like burns and broke the bull s color line just like burns and may have one. jhs if you feel you can't have a black hero swich to marciano because he was thougher and faced all challengers unlike your boy jeffries. again sign of the times is no excuse fight aLL CONTENDERS AND LEAVE RACE OUT OF IT. today kelly pavilk beat jermain taylor and desrves credit cause he b
Burns was from ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
Burns was from Canada and was not raised under the same traditions. Marciano came along many years later. There had been black champs by Rocky's time. Integration of baseball took place in 1948 and American schools a few years later. It was not the same at the turn of last century. Johnson fought no top black men or the title. Neither did Louis for about ten years.

It wasn't ducking - it was tradition of the times. Ali's times were like Marciano's. Changes had taken place. Integration had occurred. Times were different at the turn of last century. (Johnson fought no top black men for the title. Neither did Louis for about ten years.)
But Jeffries was a ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
But Jeffries was a better fighter than MArciano.
Well the racist ... ( 1 month ago by guru77771)
Well the racist traditions were bs and wrong! And during those times and before it there were whites thaddeous stevens, john brown who stood up against racist bs.
OK. But, Jeffries ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
OK. But, Jeffries did not duck Johnson and he was not scared of him. After all, Johnson lost a bout to Hart just a month and a half before Jeffries retired.
Jeffries like john ... ( 1 month ago by guru77771)
Jeffries like john l. sullivan are on record saying they would not defend the title against a black man and that is ducking and when johnson would not defend against a black man that is ducking also. Plenty of people have defended a belt to someone twho had lost before. Hell on paper jersey joe walcot should have had no chance against jeffries. Also are you telling me that finnegan who was knocked out in less than a minute was a more worth opponent than johnson?
Jeffries-Finnegan ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
Jeffries-Finnegan was in 1900. Are you saying Jeffries should have fought Johnson in 1900?
What I am saying ... ( 1 month ago by guru77771)
What I am saying that can't be disputed is that if finnegan is worthy of a title shot then johnson is despite the hart match. Also the hart match was a robbery because he didn't deserve the win over johnson anyway. regardless if finnegan got a shot johnson deserved a shot!
The white champs at ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
The white champs at that time did not fight blacks for the title. (Johnson and Louis "barely" did.) Finnegan was white. Jeff did not "duck" Johnson. He simply did not fight him for the title.
he did not fight ... ( 1 month ago by guru77771)
he did not fight him for the title because he was black not because he did not desrve a fight which was wrong!
Virtually ALL of ... ( 1 month ago by andrewr62)
Virtually ALL of the newspaper accounts of the day describe ref Alec Greggins decison declaring Hart as the winner as "strange" or "queer". To most present Johnson won handily though Hart finished strong. Greggins who was the sole judge said simply "I always give the fight to the more game man.' An obvious robbery. Some accounts even describe Hart is acting "very surprised" by the decsion." Obviously race played a huge part in this very poor decision. So can you really say it was a loss?
Ed Gunboat Smith, ... ( 1 month ago by andrewr62)
Ed Gunboat Smith, former fighter and sparring partner to Johnson stated in an interview that Jeffries only took the match because he was assured Johnson would take a dive. Interesting that the day of the fight Jeffires insisted instead of the contractual winner take all of the purse be changed to a 60-40 split. Wonder why?
Louis and Ali got ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
Louis and Ali got some weird decisions too - not racial but weird - Walcott #1, Young, Norton #2 and #3, Frazier #2. Did they really win ?
Where's the proof ... ( 1 month ago by jhs1958)
Where's the proof of what Smith said?
Jefferis lost a lot ... ( 1 month ago by ElRancholo2)
Jefferis lost a lot of weight and came out of retirement for this one. THat is rarely mentioned.
It's from the book ... ( 1 month ago by andrewr62)
It's from the book "In This Corner". He also
stated the Ketchel know down of Johnson was a rehearsed fake to enhance the vaulue of the film.
Johnson was a top ... ( 3 weeks ago by BoxingManiac)
Johnson was a top competitor when Jeffries was fighting. Tyson started professional boxing in 1985. Ali retired in 81. Johnson started fighting professionally in 1894. thats funny since Johnson has been fighting before James Jeffries. Jeffries started professional boxing in 1896. That is a horrible analogy dood.
Johnson's KO of ... ( 3 weeks ago by jhs1958)
Johnson's KO of Ketchel looks fake. Ketchel went down a fraction of a second before Johnson's punch got there. Do not believe the Jeffries pitch, though.
I'm just saying ... ( 3 weeks ago by jhs1958)
I'm just saying that a man cannot fight forever. Just because he doesn't fight another man who becomes a top contender doesn't mean he fears that man or is ducking him. Besides fighting a top man requires getting into better physical condition. When champs get older they do not want to go through that when other foes allowed easier training.
holy shit that ... ( 3 weeks ago by BoxingManiac)
holy shit that comment appeared in the wrong place!!!! I was replying to when you said "if Jeffries ducked Johnson; Ali ducked Tyson" thing. Holy god! What your saying is true, but I think that the color line was really the only thing in the way, and if Jeffries would have not drawn the color line, he most likely would have fought jack johnson.
The weight lost of ... ( 2 weeks ago by KriegKoenigWig)
The weight lost of 110 pounds would be called today as overtraining ..... without medical checking .... nobody would even try it . But the guy's main motivation for fighting Jonhson was wrong.
