Special Effects Test 1 - Budd Dwyer Suicide Style - Canon XL2 - Cinevate Brevis35

Uploaded by: ExFilms

Video Stream Description:
Effect to recreate the look of the Budd Dwyer suicide video. Canon XL2 at 24p, exposure F4 1/2 on the Canon and F2.8 on the Nikon, shutter speed 1/48. Cinevate Brevis35 adapter with Nikon 50mm lens. Nothing done in post aside from flipping the image and sound design.
We're not happy with how the wall splatter came out. Not enough splatter and the color was off. We'll be trying it again. The blood pouring out of the mouth (Budd Dwyer style) turned out pretty good I think. The focus pull when he lifts the gun shows the narrow depth of field we get with the B

Yeah you're right. When he became limp naturally his head was too low and blocked part of the effect. We had the actor cheat his head up a little so the light would hit the blood coming out of his mouth. Next time we'll spend more time blocking it so it looks more natural, among the other fixes already mentioned. Can't wait to do it again. :)

elholandes: I agree about the gunshot sound. I'll find a nicer one for the next test.

in reality.if he had shot him self in the head. it would have splattered piece's of his brain/skull and would have made a wider blood splatter, much darker to. & all that blood just poring out of his mouth more than likely wouldnt have happend, especially at the steady flow .

SONofAnamVet: Next time we'll get that splatter right. Definitely needs to be darker and chunkier. :) The steady flow of blood pouring out of his mouth is pretty accurate compared to the real "Budd Dwyer" video it's based on.

very cool, looking forward to seeing it! the only resin i said it wasnt all that accurate,is one,it was going a little fast & more likely if his head had fell forward like so,it more than likely would have pushed his jaw up closing his mouth & mostly blocking the blood from coming out of his mouth, that and blood mixed with saliva kinda makes it a little thicker making the flow go slower :)

It actually depends on the gun you are using. I've seen suicide vids where the person used a 9mm and at the moment of the shot, there was no exit wound but you could see top of their head bulge out for a second in a cone shape. Also, after the "death" scene, I would suggest you slouch over a bit more and make groaning sounds. That's what you really do when you shoot yourself. See the Bjork suicide for this example. Good work by the way.

You're right. I've heard that Budd Dwyer used a .357 magnum with full metal jacketed rounds... This clearly explains the exit wound. Do you think there would've been an exit would had he used hollow points? I've also heard that if a small caliber bullet is used in head shots, such as a .22 derringer, the bullet actually bounces around inside the skull turning the brain into mush... Do you know if this is true?

Hollow points are ... ( 1 week ago by GruntyAssassin)
Hollow points are designed to cavitate and mushroom on impact causing sever internal damage. There wouldn't be an exit wound to the head for some rounds but others would leave a nasty hole. The whole .22 thing.........it's a joke. Gun owners laugh and get irritated when people make this statement. Completely untrue.

Yes it is true, .22s are used fer some close range sniper shots so that it doesnt take anyone else out.. it jusat so happens that it turns ur brain into mush at the same time

No it does not. The bullet does not bounce around inside of your head. The bullet does not turn your brain into swiss cheese, mush, etc.

if u think that then you know absolutly nothing about guns.... a .22 could pierce the skull twice at 25 easily, point blank wouldnt be a challenge whatso ever
