Dokes vs. Holmes ... ( 7 months ago by WashBullets28)
Dokes vs. Holmes could have been a classic and a defining fight for Holmes.
Rematch headlined ... ( 7 months ago by doniemc77)
Rematch headlined the undercard of Holmes/Witherspoon on 5/20/83. Was the first time two HW title fights took place on the same night never mention the same card. Dokes was already into dope by the time of the rematch but came out with a majority 15 round draw.
I think Holmes ... ( 7 months ago by Belburg)
I think Holmes would've owned Dokes.Dokes' boxing skills weren't developed as many thought at the time.
Why did Holmes and ... ( 7 months ago by WashBullets28)
Why did Holmes and Weaver not have a second fight? Weaver had the WBA belt from 80'-82 and deefended it twice against Coetzee and Tillis. Their first fight was awesome. Did Weaver duck Holmes or vice versa?
It's hard to say. ... ( 7 months ago by doniemc77)
It's hard to say. I think that the honus was on Weaver to seek out Holmes as the Assassin was the Lineal champ following on from his victory over a badly faded Ali. Did Hercules seek him out? I don't remember him doing it and even had he I don't think Don King would have been too keen as in late 1982 the question of a Holmes-Cooney was rematch wasn't a matter of if but when. Weaver/Dokes were thus SOL.
Dokes was also not ... ( 7 months ago by WashBullets28)
Dokes was also not given any legitamite title opts after losing to Coetzee. He had just 1 loss when he fought Holyfield in 89'. A Dokes tyson fight could have been a great slugfest. Holmes/Pinklon/Witherspoon could have given him a shot in 84'-86
I think part of ... ( 7 months ago by Belburg)
I think part of that reason was the fact that Dokes only fought once in 84, and twice in 85, and the drug problem really started to kick in at that time.A prime Dokes could possibly beat Witherspoon and Thomas, but Holmes may have been too much due to his inactivity.
I feel it was the ... ( 7 months ago by Belburg)
I feel it was the political climate due to the fact that Weaver was not a Don King fighter. If there is one negative about Larry, it was that he never became the unified champ, and Weaver would definitely at this time been a formidable opponent.
"The first ... ( 7 months ago by BooBooLane)
"The first knockdown"---------there was only one knockdown.
The draw was also a farce. Boxing is the metaphor of Life. Like politicians, Boxing keeps giving us garbage, we keep taking it.
The draw was ... ( 7 months ago by doniemc77)
The draw was farcial not not the FARCE that many would have you believe. In the weeks before the rematch it was assumed that Dokes was coked up, out of shape and would make an easy mark for. Whatever the case Dokes upset the odds by taking the fight to Weaver early and while fading down the stretch he never was in SIGNIFICANT trouble.
Weaver won the ... ( 7 months ago by BooBooLane)
Weaver won the rematch, at least 9 or 10 rounds; Boxing wanted Dokes to win--Dokes won.
So both fights stand in Boxing hx as just two more bad jokes, noting that Boxing is a very funny sport.
at least nine ... ( 7 months ago by doniemc77)
at least nine rounds so that would have made it nine to six weaver. in the books of most that would have been competitive not a farce so thus your underlying premise has to be questioned as well. your argument should be seen in the same light as the driver who tells a cop that they only had "one drink" when he had three!!!
Ok, don, you have a ... ( 7 months ago by BooBooLane)
Ok, don, you have a point. Let's call the second fight badly decided; "farce" could be an exaggeration. Could be...
On the other hand, in two fights with Michael "Dynamite" Dokes, Mike Weaver is the one who got blown up. He would probably tell us the word "farce" is too mild.
I understand that ... ( 6 months ago by guitarbandit7498)
I understand that and I'm not saying I would have stopped the fight. I'm just saying I understand why they stopped it and Weaver WAS hurt. And what fighter doesn't complain when a fight is stopped? I've seen boxers almost comatose but when the ref steps if he gets pissed off, like getting his head caved in was part of his plan and the ref should have noticed that.
A referee should be ... ( 6 months ago by jonvdw)
A referee should be objective, and not let himself get influenced by what occurred in some other fight. And of course Weaver was hurt, hell, he was knocked down. But he got up immediately and his eyes were clear. In no way was he getting his "head caved in". He was doing a rope-a-dope and punching back. The referee stopped it too soon, that's the bottom line. And like I said, if this was just another fight, so what, but this was for the heavyweight championship of the world.
Yeah, you can say ... ( 6 months ago by guitarbandit7498)
Yeah, you can say they shouldn't be influenced all you want. But when you got the heads of whatever boxing commisionthat sanctioned the fight breathing down your neck demanding that you not let a fighter get hurt because of what had happened it's kind of hard to be 100% objective. I take it you don't remember what a big deal it was back then when Kim got killed. It was on national television and there was a huge cry across the country for the sport to be banned. And Weaver WAS NOT fighting back.
Fighters ( ... ( 6 months ago by jonvdw)
Fighters (unfortunately) die every year in the ring, and every time it leads to the same reaction (people asking for the sport to be banned). I'm just saying that a GOOD referee has to be able to judge a fight objectively (sanctioning people breathing down his neck or not). Only Joey Curtis knew what exactly made him stop the fight, but the point remains that it was premature. And about Weaver not fighting back: he throws a left hook and his guard is pretty solid. In no way is he "comatose".

Tate banged Weaver for 14 rounds and the fight was never close to being stopped!!
What the heck? ... ( 3 months ago by ihatelifejosemartine)
What the heck? Weaver was holding himself up as best as he could, I don't see why this fight was stopped at all!
The wife of Joey ... ( 3 months ago by fkudf)
The wife of Joey Curtis had dinner reservations and the undercard was long!
For those of you ... ( 2 months ago by Odawg96)
For those of you questioning how seriously Weaver was hurt and whether he could have weathered the storm, check the clip up here of him fighting Coetzee (round 8). It's an EXACT replica of this, but Joey Curtis ain't the ref, so the end result is completely different. Bottom line: THIS fight was stopped too soon.
Weaver wasn't ... ( 2 months ago by pegleyjr)
Weaver wasn't throwing anything back.
LoL, Boxing ... ( 1 week ago by fightfan101a)
LoL, Boxing so-called Historians are looking back to the 30's/20's for fixed fights. I haven't seen anything close to this travisty in any fight in the 20's/30's era. Look to Don King and you will see the answer. Tyson/Sheldon was another Don King special among others. Don King is the Don of Boxing!!!
