The 15 round classic, Marvin Hagler vs Roberto Duran in 1983 was a valiant loosing effort for Roberto, who surprised his critics and led on points after 12 brutal rounds. The fight was also a defining moment for Hagler, who outlasted the fading Duran in the final rounds to take the decision. A great fight between two closely matched warriors.
Frank Lotierzo wrote, "And for 12 rounds Duran had Hagler lunging and missing, not mention had the fight been fought today, Duran would've won since he led on the official scorecards. How could that be, Hagler was taller with a longer reach and in his prime fighting at his natural weight? That's b
ecause Hagler, despite bald and bulging muscles, wasn't at his best when he had to become Joe Frazier and fight as the aggressor. Hagler was at his best when his opponents went to him allowing him to counter punch. Three and a half years later Sugar Ray Leonard took Duran's blue print and added some
leg movement and some more right hand leads and took the title from Hagler as a 4-1 underdog."

I don't know how this was such a close decision, Hagler won this easy. One judge had it 146-145. That's a crock. Don't get me wrong, for moving up in weight Duran did an incredible job. Master boxer. But he was outgunned.

Hagler's full of it. He didn't beat the fight out of Duran, he had to win the last two rounds just to win the fight. He was bigger and stronger than Hands of Stone but never really hurt him over 15 rounds.
with Duran it was whether he was in shape or not. He was for Hagler but not for Hearns and it showed.

I finally found this fight!! This is great. Two of the great fighters, too.
Duran did a lot better than a lot of people expected, but Marvin pulled it out.

Seen as Hagler started and stayed at 160lbs his whole career and Duran was peak at 135lbs id say Duran did an amazing job.

Duran wasn't the best middleweight but did really well here against a naturally bigger man and Hagler knocked out all his challengers for years.

I agree, the judges cards were way too close than they should have been. I had Hagler winning 10 out of the 15 rounds easy. I also thought Hagler beat Leonard, so perhaps I am a bit bias, being a fan of Hagler and all.

I would have loved to have seen an aggressive Hagler in there against Duran. He would have stopped Roberto in 5. Easy.. This fite was overrated. It was not great.

Hagler should have been more aggressive. Like he said later he fought Duran like a sparring session. Duran could not really step up and beat the legends of the 80s. He lost easily to Hearns. Hearns beat Duran like Duran was a club fighter. Easy!!!

Duran was a brave heart? He was a bully. When he lost to Benitez he sort of did nothing and quit in his mind. When he fought Ray he did no mas. He did well when he was beating his opponent, but when he was losing he really lost big. Just ask Hit Man Hearns.

Hagler fought a terrible fight that night. He thought Duran would be aggressive and Duran laid back.. Hagler had to regroup.. Hagler fought too soft and it was a sparring session. Look anyone who thinks Hagler had the power of Hearns is wrong. Hearns knocked out Roldan in 4, and it took Hagler until 10 to stop Roldan..
