Hold on.....your ... ( 4 months ago by MikeNichols50)
Hold on.....your original points were not incorrect...yes, there was a "moment to moment" response because this unit functioned as almost ONE "person" [their collective "E.S.P." was THAT good] everyone was listening [really hard!] to each other.....and, chord changes may have been modified to appropriately support the soloist
[or Miles, in his melody statement]...but no matter how many chords were added [or subtracted] as they went from point A to point B, the larger structural architecture....

Thanks again for clearing things up. I will definitely check out Shorter's book sometime.

Probably not ... ( 2 months ago by cobaltjones)
Probably not everyone knows this interesting tidbit. During the performances of this remarkable quintet, Miles would communicate countless shifts in the music, tempo, feel, dynamics, with the use of little melodic codes. That's what enabled them to seamlessly coordinate the metamorphic development of the improvisations. I really believe this to be the height of western civilization in terms of spontaneous creation.

hmm. the larger structural architecture. "signposts" huh, thats deep. i almost get it. it seems just like a modification of interpretation. wow Ron Carter was the bass MAN in these recordings. But Herbie is probably my favorite. He's so deep.

Ron Carter was ... ( 2 months ago by MikeNichols50)
Ron Carter was called "Checkpoint Charlie" because the guys in the band could always rely
on him to indicate those structural "signposts".....And, Hancock and Carter spent countless hours playing "1 on 1"
[as well as sessions on Blue Note, etc.] to develop that "E.S.P."; no magic, just lots of hard work.....It's a rare thing to find with players these days...
Ahmad Jamal was ... ( 2 months ago by MikeNichols50)
Ahmad Jamal was another [that Miles really liked] who used space [or, "silence"] effectively...if you listen to him carefully
in his 50's recordings you can hear it...
One thing you need ... ( 2 months ago by MikeNichols50)
One thing you need to understand was that Miles' playing underwent many changes between his start with "Bird" in the 40's and his "Second Great Quintet" with Hancock, Shorter et al...in the 60's Miles wanted to transcend "style": Except perhaps Dorham [in his mid-60's Blue Note sessions] the other players you cited had only one specific "sound", or, "style"...Trust me, if you try to play Dizzy/Bird/Bud "licks" over the changes to "Dolores", "Sorcerer", or "ESP", you will sound out of place...
The style developed ... ( 2 months ago by MikeNichols50)
The style developed in the mid-60's by the Second Quintet was based on "linearity", not "running chords" which was the Bebop "style" [i.e., Clifford Brown, Dizzy, Parker, et al].....If you need to learn Bebop, as Jaco said, you gotta learn the "heads"...Do you know who wrote "Donna Lee" by chance??? I'd be interested in your answer....
Everything Miles ... ( 2 months ago by dodgyphil23)
Everything Miles Davis played sounded like everything else Miles Davis played. One tune and it lasted for 60 years. No warmth ,no enjoyment. Muppet with bugle.

I hope Mr. Venantius has read this reply...If anyone disputes this answer [because most books - including the "Real Book" credit this to Charlie Parker], they should read Miles' autobiography... Just today I heard another great Miles' solo: the live version of "Straight No Chaser", from the album originally called "Jazz @ the Plaza", with Trane, Cannonball & Bill Evans - who had a little trouble keeping up with the fast tempo...

It's not true. Miles did wrote Donna Lee, he said so in his biography. I believe he also said it was the record company's fault that it ended up being credited as one of Bird's compositions.
