Rocky's opponents ... ( 8 months ago by Bugees)
Rocky's opponents are underrated. They are unknown to the large public because Rocky eclipsed them all. Ali's opponents are famous because they occasionally beat him (see Frazier and Norton). Roland La Starza was 37-0 before fighting Rocky. He was a tremendous fighter, very fast and clever. Unfortunately no one seems to have the video of his first masterful fight against Rocky.
Tunney was a great ... ( 7 months ago by dorsi68)
Tunney was a great fighter and is the 2nd best light-heavy ever behind Friztmons. Although Dempsey was rusty and lost his drive after 1923 or so ... I think Tunney on a given nite could have beaten Marciano or Ali e primes and if not , it would have been very close.
Fitzsimmons was ... ( 5 months ago by Mowglieboy69)
Fitzsimmons was primarily a Middleweight, not a Light Heavyweight. Ezzard Charles clearly outranks Fitz at LHW, as does Archie Moore. Gene Tunney ranks just behind them. Tunney was at his best at LHW, he was a small HW, no way he beats someone like Ali. Marciano is a possibility.
Fitzsimmons first ... ( 5 months ago by dorsi68)
Fitzsimmons first won the middelweight championship , but than went up to heavyweight and weighted well over 160 lbs (like 167 to 170+). His last championship was light-heavy while fighting heavies. Its my opinion , but he would knock out Moore and beat Charles (Charles is definetely toip 5 light-heavy). Tunney may beat Ali if he is not at his best as he would be the best pure boxer he ever faced. I rank Ali and Marciano higher than Tunney , that is why I said a given note.
Tunney is not a top ... ( 4 months ago by Mowglieboy69)
Tunney is not a top 10 HW. At LHW he ranks #3 behind Charles and Moore for me. He'd give Fitz a beating, but based on size alone he'd have nothing for Ali, considering that a prime Ali was at least as skilled, as well as bigger.
Fitz would get destroyed by both Charles and Moore. Fitz was primitive, as were fighters of that era. Seriously, you think that boxing has been on the same level since it started in the late 1800's until now? No, it's been in the modern era from around the 40's on.
You have but to ... ( 4 months ago by Mowglieboy69)
You have but to watch film of a guy like Fitz, Johnson, Ketchell, etc to see this. Great for their era, and deserving of ATG status for being pioneers, but technically, and in a head to head sense, nowhere near as skilled as fighters of later eras. Tunney was a bit of a pioneer for modern styles as well, but still not as skilled as a guy like Charles or Jones Jr.
Although I respect ... ( 4 months ago by dorsi68)
Although I respect your decision , Doug Jones who weighted under 190 lbs beat Ali in 1963 and Cooper almost knocked him out. They were by no means better than Fritzmons or Tunney. My top 3 light-heavies are Fritzmons , Tunney and Langford. Than you have Charles and either McCoy or Moore. Boxing was alot better 100 years ago compared to now. The techniques are different , but after littel trianing in adjusting ... fighetrs backl than are way more superior.

i personally think ppl think boxin has changed last 100yrs but it really hasnt, if u look at TOP fighters today and compare then 2 say 50plus yrs ago TOP fighters would b very similar.willie pep style wise similar 2 mayweather would b a gr8 fight.marciano at any weight middleweight up would beat 99% of them.alot of ppl dont appreciate the true art of boxin they wanna see ppl like mayweather go tie 2 tie but y should he, ppl dont know how much skill it takes 2 do wot he does

tunney had a full carrer record of 81 wins and 1 loss........
thats the best record i ever heard of
Mowglie, I would ... ( 1 month ago by huthut91)
Mowglie, I would certainly have agreed with you a while back, but as I read more and study these guys closer, dunno. They look crude in the way they have their hands so low coming forward, but bear in mind these guys never left the gym, they sparred and sparred ad nueseum and fought almost as much. I think they were MUCH more adept at avoiding shots by moving their head and shifting the angle of their body. Read Dempsey's book for instance- he knew every technique modern guys do then some.
Doug Jones did not ... ( 3 weeks ago by sashe44)
Doug Jones did not beat Ali...Ali beat him decisively -- watch the fight and you can see for yourself
The fight was very ... ( 3 weeks ago by dorsi68)
The fight was very close and many experts and boxing people made the same comment. If you saw the fight and were neautral with the fighters , it was exremely close and it could have gone either way. I thought Ali won barely myself
Hold on a second!!! ... ( 3 weeks ago by set2light)
Hold on a second!!!!
This era of boxing practiced racial discrimination. Blacks were not allowed to contend for the title because they were black. How Disgusting!!!! So what do we have here? THE WHITE BREAD CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD. In the name of all thats decent and fair about sport, Dempsey and Tunney should not
be regared as real world champions. "World" implies inclusion Hitler would have liked this fight, not a true boxing fan. Great company you guys find yourselves in

You are a punk. F yourself, then put on the gloves , learn something, then f yourself again. Idiotic pieces of sh like you should not be heard.

Boxing 101:
The guy who Dempsey beat to win the title, Willard, won his title from Jack Johnson, who was black. While Dempsey was champ, the only two decent black heavyweight contenders were Willis and Kid Norfolk, neither was very notable. Dempsey tried to fight Willis but the promtors kept it from happeni
ng because he didn't want more race riots (Johnson-Jefferies). Dempsey fought several blacks prior to becoming champ and beat them all.

Idiot 101:
or how to prove the point your opponent is making
Firstly, admit that Dempsey never did fight a black for the title Secondly, show that blacks were not permitted to contend for the title Yeah, good thanks ElRancholo2, if I need more help I'll give you a call.
Dempsey was willing ... ( 1 week ago by tehmode)
Dempsey was willing to fight anyone, and signed to fight black challenger Harry Wills twice. The fight didn't happen because of security fears. Blacks WERE allowed to contend for the world title, as Tiger Flowers fought, and won, the middleweight title in 1926. Hell Jack Johnson was heavyweight champion in 1908! Joe Gans a little bit earlier.
Blacks were allowed ... ( 1 week ago by Aurelian147)
Blacks were allowed to fight for titles, with the exception of the heavyweight crown, the most prestigious. Johnson's win over Jeffries provoked race riots, and he was so reviled the authorities were determined never to have another black champion, which is why there was not another for 22 years.
I still stand by ... ( 1 week ago by set2light)
I still stand by the rather obvious conclusion that this fight, Tunney/Dempsey, is white bread only.
