They look crude in the way they have their hands so low coming forward, but bear in mind these guys never left the gym, they sparred and sparred ad nueseum and fought almost as much. I think they were MUCH more adept at avoiding shots by moving their head and shifting the angle of their body. Read Dempsey's book for instance- he knew every technique modern guys do then some. While Dempsey was champ, the only two decent black heavyweight contenders were Willis and Kid Norfolk, neither was very notable.
