Awesome stuff! Thank you. One of the biggest wins of Robinson's incredible career.
This fight shows ... ( 6 months ago by LorcanFilms)
This fight shows Robinson's true greatness! Turpin's jerky, awkward style really upset Sugar Ray's rhythm. Yet despite being badly cut, he scored the needed KO. Robinson was the greatest -- something even Ali concedes!
ROBINSONS WORK WITH ... ( 6 months ago by AuldThwaite)
ROBINSONS WORK WITH HIS SHOULDER IS SUPERB ALMOST AS WELL TIMED AS HIS PUNCHES! Turpin could really fight and was a stronger man than Ray pysically, but Ray can do it all and he is past his prime here.
What a chin on ... ( 6 months ago by AuldThwaite)
What a chin on Turpin those were bone breakers! Carmen Basillio who has no great love of Ray concedes that he was the hardest puncher he had ever faced-shattered his eye socket early on-. I would have to say he was prob the best of everything in his prime.

This was back when boxing was a real sport - not about all the ridiculous politics and bullshit boxing is today.
One of the best ... ( 5 months ago by Thesunrisecat)
One of the best clips I've seen of Robinson.. Most of the clips the audio is horrible or non existant. The sound of the punches is superb. This is the kind of video you show the dumb kids that say Tyson was the best.

So nice to see a good-quality clip from this era. Turpin's is one of the sadder stories in British boxing, but this gives some idea of what he was capable of, and of Sugar Ray's greatness.
It wasn't about ... ( 3 months ago by schmoop14)
It wasn't about ridiculous politics and bullshit? Hey, there were great fighters who fought often and fought each other, but this was also the era of mobsters Blinky Palermo and Frankie Carbo being boxing's "underworld commissioners." Even Jack Newfield, in his excellent book picking apart Don King, points out they were worse than King ever would be. There's a reason MSG matchmaker Teddy Brenner's book, covering mostly this era, was called "Only The Ring Was Square."

Randy Turpin still ... ( 2 months ago by lemigod)
Randy Turpin still remains the most talented Boxer Britian has ever produced.
Forget the Overrated Hattons and Calzhages coz Turpin was the best of them all.
Sugar Ray Robinson ... ( 2 months ago by 1goat)
Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest fighter in history. The debate begins with, who's number two. Robby was one of the top-5 punchers at both middleweight and welterweight. And for a guy who always says how much he hated violence, he was a nasty bastard in the ring. And don't let him get you hurt or in trouble, or it's all over!
what about Ted Kid' ... ( 2 months ago by lemonite1)
what about Ted Kid' Lewis or Buchannan? Turpin was great though. man was he an awkward fighter; real squirly, loose. he ain't cooperating with Robby here. must be driving Robby mad, he looks frustrated here, something one never saw outta Robinson. It took a pissed of Robinson to really beat Turpin.
well thats the game ... ( 1 month ago by jhman07)
well thats the game of boxing...its not violence, robby shows alot of respect to his opponents, even to this guy after they fought.
Robinson was great ... ( 1 month ago by Peterh588)
Robinson was great but we don't see a lot of footage from when he was under 30. All his famous fights were fought when he was in his mid to late 30s. Boxers peak well before then.
Turpin you was one ... ( 1 month ago by BlackCountryLad)
Turpin you was one tough bastard mate. RIP old son.
turpin the greatest. ( 1 month ago by mhy249)
turpin the greatest.
the fight was ... ( 1 month ago by frisbyrb5)
the fight was nearly stopped earlier i read, with turpin opening a large gash above robinsons left eye, true heart to not go down on the ropes, shows his will to win dont think the ref should of stopped it, best british boxer ever.

frisbyrb5:
Interestingly, the referee was Ruby Goldstein, the same New York State Athletic Commission referee who, about 10 years later, ruined his own career through his misfortune of refereeing the third Emile Griffith/Benny Paret match that resulted in Paret's death.
Array ( 3 weeks ago by foxygranpa6)
frisbyrb5:
Some experts criticized Goldstein for having a tendency to stop fights too quickly. But Robinson was at or just past his peak at the time; in a few more seconds he might have killed Turpin. He had killed Jimmy Doyle about five years earlier, and Goldstein must have known that. Robinson was one of
the hardest hitters, was one of the best combination punchers, and had hands that were among the fastest in history. He was one of only 4 fighters to score more than 100 knockouts.
Array ( 3 weeks ago by foxygranpa6)
frisbyrb5:
On the other hand, Griffith had only a fair punching ability. The previous round had been basically even; Paret had held his own. Paret had been KOed by Gene Fullmer a few months before and his death may well have been a result of cumulative beatings. So, if Goldstein had stopped Robinson/Turpin
a few seconds later, and Griffith/Paret a few seconds earlier, who knows how things might have been different? In the interim, he was known as 'One of the best referees in America.'
Array ( 3 weeks ago by foxygranpa6)
frisbyrb5:
Please don't misunderstand; It's not my purpose to pick a quarrel. I don't know any more about boxing, or refereeing, than you do. For all I know, Goldstein may have stopped it too soon. But, he may also have saved Randy's life. In the absence of the gift of prophecy, Monday Morning Quarterbackin
g is the best we can manage. I'm as guilty as anyone else. Football, boxing, and refereeing are skills that I have never possessed.
turpin complained ... ( 5 days ago by koddswollop)
turpin complained about the stoppage afterwards but i would have stopped it even sooner because he wasnt throwing anything back and he was helpless for quite a while, im britsh aswell but i do take my hat off to beating robinson first time around
