51362879, It has long been suspected that Liston's corner put something on the gloves. It supposedly happened in another of Liston's fights. I don't know about the YouTube clip, but I remember seeing something a long time ago. Ali, knowing about the "mob" controlled Liston, was convinced something had been done intentionally. He really was mad enough that he wanted to stop and prove it. Angelo was smart enough to push him back out, knowing he might not get another shot at the title. Good thing.

There are two defects I see in Sonny Liston. The first one is he lets his hands down, hence, exposing himself. The second one is that he is going after Ali and wasting his energy when he should let Ali come towards him . After all, Liston was the champion.

ali proved to be adirty fighter all through his time in the ring. inside of his gloves, hanging on, thumbs in the eyes ect ect ect

traductoritaliano, liston never faced such a fast fighter before ali, he wasn't really good at defense because he relied on his offense to beat opponents. he had to go after ali cuz that was his only way to get inside, if he waited, ali could've just stood at long range and throw that long stinging jab of his

Ali winning his 1st championship and reviving boxing in general. Watched this fight 1000 times and it never ceases to amaze me. I wonder if he knew,in his wildest dreams, how great he was to become. He not only shook up the world he helped change it. There is no question Ali=G.O.A.T.
With all due ... ( 4 weeks ago by warrior350es)
With all due respect to Ali, Liston did not seem to be displaying his true "stuff" here. He appeared unusually awkward and almost as if he were willing to just follow Ali around the ring without landing a blow. His poor performance in this fight and in the second fight was just outright mysterious. Certainly Ali was a great fighter but I think something else was at play here considering Ali really had no business fighting Liston at this point in his career.
What I really ... ( 3 weeks ago by GrowlinWillie)
What I really remember about this fight was how confused everyone was at the end, except for Clay. He knew Liston wasn't coming out, no one else knew it. He started dancing, held his hands up, because he knew.

Hip Hop Timeline: ... ( 1 week ago by LesaneRecords)
Hip Hop Timeline: 1965: In a historic boxing bout, Muhammad Ali defeats Sonny Liston in the 6th round. Before the bout, however, Ali recited one of the earliest known rhymes: Clay comes out to meet Liston And Liston starts to retreat If Liston goes back any further He'll end up in a ringside seat. Clay swings with a left, Clay swings with a right, Look at young Cassius Carry the fight. Liston keeps backing But there's not enough room It's a matter of time...

you've got to remember that liston had been legitamately beaten before this and made to look extremely ordinary. he always hid behind the claim that he threw it, but the truth is this is what happpens when you hit bullies back
LOL nice speech kid ... ( 4 days ago by Brianjonestown)
LOL nice speech kid, but no sale. Liston was the Tyson of his era and he predicted a knockout in two rounds. Later that night at the hospital, he said to his manager "that wasn't the guy I was supposed to fight." The bully was crashed by the greatest of all time. If Liston had thrown the fight, his corner wouldn't have put liniment on his gloves to blind Clay. And he wouldn't have stuck around to get his faced chopped up like raw liver.
