Has there ever been a more SEDATED interview with a newly crowned heavyweight champion of the world?!? LOL
What a great finish. Weaver was a fighter I liked quite a bit, and after this fight Tate's career came to a sudden halt when he was KO'd by Trevor Berbick in Montreal, and I was there.
After 15 rounds...all punch are miracle and basically!!! ;-D
Doorman -- those two fights occured within a month of each other, and while Kim's death maybe started the conversation, Cobb's beating cemented the decision by the then- three major boxing organizations. And, Cosell's quitting boxing after that fight compelled many involved in the sport to re-evaluate. He was, like him or not, very influential at the time.
Going to 12 rounds was in reaction to Ray Mancini-Duk Koo Kim, in which Kim died shortly after being knocked out in the last round. Holmes-Cobb was certainly very one-sided but Cobb was not badly hurt, Cosell's absurd phony rant notwithstanding.
That punch that ko'd Tate was basically a 'miracle' punch. Weaver was a cool guy.
Tate stayed away for 59 minutes then a very short, sweet left hook n the most unlikely Heavyweight champion until Buster Douglas knocked out Tyson 10 years later. Too bad Weaver never had a really big payday. King screwed him in the first fight with Dokes.
Yep, I saw that fight on regular, free TV. Even before we had cable. To this day it's still the most shocking last-chance, desperation KO I've ever seen and one of the last 15-round HW Championship bouts ever. Just a couple years later, after Holmes destruction of Tex Cobb, they dropped the last three rounds.
I think Tate's life would make quite a riveting documentary; one of the most spectacular failures in sports history. RIP.
Poor John Tate nothing went right for him after this fight and it ended in tragedy when he was killed in a car crash aged just 43.
His chin would've caught up with him eventually...but he would've gotten the big payday against a shot Ali later on in 1980. Instead, it was Holmes and his career took an entirely different path instead. I just look at these old fights from ABC and CBS and I have another bone to pick with that scumbag Don King. The reason boxing was so popular was because you could SEE marquee fighters on TV. Now, that doesn't happen anymore...and yes, King was largely responsible for that
one of the most amazing Knockouts I ever seen. Ended John tates career!
Weaver had late round power. He also took out Coetzee in the late round with a huge right hand.
the funny thing is, when he layed out john tate, he closed his eys and just swung. after the match they said how do you feel after that victory...he said "I WHAT!?" anything can happen
Did Tate suddenly decide to take a snooze at 2:31?
I, too, remember watching this fight. Keep fighting until the final bell!
I remember seeing this fight on ABC. As I remember.......on the prefight they toured Big John Tate's farm in Texas I think. He was out on his feet. Thanks for posting this one.
Lol.
Spectacular !! You gotta handed to Mike Weaver. Courage, resolve, durable. tenacity etc. Not to mention a gentleman......this guy could play for Lombardi anyday !!
really now i cant belive the referee even counted.....
My favorite moment was Larry Holmes' disapointment with Weaver. He had gone many tough rounds with Weaver, and bitterly said : "Weaver didn't go there to fight. He went there to survive..." And then BOOM! An amazing knockout!!!
I saw this fight live and I had money on Weaver by ko (he was a big underdog)! One of the best days of my life!!!
It was really a last gasp left hood
This took me back...thanks for PostinG!
I was 8 when i saw this fight. That is what you call a KO. He knocked his dick in the dirt.
