Oddly I just googled this and the only reference I could find to the phrase was a discussion of this song! The thread also revealed it's a French expression rather than Scottish as I had always supposed- le cimetière sous l'ocean which they call the graveyard of the sea. Quite different from the definition I provided.

It's the interface between air earth and sea- where the seal lives. A reference back to between light and dark and tying in the drowning and horizon references all in a single phrase. It's very archaic which seems to suit his character.

I was astounded to examine the lyrics to this wonderful aria and find the term "seals watershead". It is a rare term which he must have either done great research to find or perhaps encountered accidentally and found inspirational. His lyrics are as dense as Shakespeare- with layer upon layer of carefully revealed meaning. It is irony that these lyrics are often hidden behind his voice?
