Nice video, but slow ... ( 5 months ago by PUGCAT)
Nice video, but slow little guys waltzing around the ring flat footed looks really odd and dated. I don't think either of them would have made too much of a splash in the 60's or 70's. A young George Foreman probably wouldn't break a sweat knocking out either one of them.
Marciano would have ... ( 4 months ago by Aurelian147)
Marciano would have been a Ron Stander-type fighter had he fought in the 70s, ranked about #25 in the world. Very tough but very limited against big, prime, hard-punching heavyweights.

Maybe not even as good as Ron Stander.

I see the anti-Marciano mission team has already been here and soiled the comments section. To rectify this, here's a quote from the great Bert Sugar of Boxing Illustrated & Ring fame:
"Rocky Marciano and then Mohammed Ali, and maybe Larry Holmes afterwards, were the last vestiges of a time when the heavyweight champion and the heavyweight championship, his realm, were great." -Bert Randolph Sugar
Marciano-LaStarza ... ( 4 months ago by killpolitics)
Marciano-LaStarza #1 ended in a points decision for Rock, who didn't appreciate LaStarza's comments. It was a non-championship fight. So Rock later invited him to a title fight & TKO'd LaStarza who had broken bones & blood vessels in his arms requiring hospitalisation & surgery. Rock actually held him up. LaS later said he wished Rock had just KO'd him sooner.
Going into their first fight, LaStarza's record was 37-0, 19 KOs. A formidable fighter. Rock was the greatest fighter ever.

RISE OF STEROIDS IN 70S
Jay Silvester, of Brigham Young university USA, questioned fellow competitors at the 1972 Olympics. The range of steroid use he found ranged from 10mg a day to 100mg. Seems high quality steroids correctly administered are undetectable & safe.

The statistical survey below together with other info incl recent statements by the Nevada boxing commission point to full immersion of post-70s pro boxing in steroids & other illegal bulk-building & performance-enhancing dopants.
Modern heavyweights fairly generally have about as much chance of being free of this crap as they have of being fully immersed in Lake Michigan and stepping out bone dry.
Brigham Young ... ( 4 months ago by PUGCAT)
Brigham Young University you say was studying steriods, hey is there is a Mormon link here, Rex Layne was Mormon, do ya suppose he was juiced? Seriously all this 'roid talk is tiresome, as is the theory that anyone who doesn't have the style of a drunk fighting underwater can't be natural. LaStarza had a good record but who did he beat that was any good? He was another guy that avoided anyone who wasn't a club fighter or an over the hill jouneyman.
REPLY TO ... ( 4 months ago by killpolitics)
REPLY TO ANTI-MARCIANO DETRACTORS INC.
LaStarza had a terrific record when he met Marciano 1st time & was widely considered also to have one of the best defences in the division.
Read what people who actually fought Marciano said: "relentless", "like fighting an airplane propellor", "hurt just to bump into him", "could beat anyone", etc. You're really just making asses of yourselves now.
The standards set ... ( 3 months ago by stardingo747)
The standards set in sports are always set by how large a pool athletes are drawn from; the more people play or practice a sport, the larger the talent and work-ethic pool drawn from. From the 30's until the late 60's, an unoficial rule in america dictated that if you did not know how to box, you were not a man. You can't compare heavies of that era with modern ones; they were drawn from a way bigger talent pool just as modern B-ball players are drawn from a bigger talent pool.
If pro-basketball's ... ( 3 months ago by stardingo747)
If pro-basketball's standards are higher now, is the raw size of the pool the player's are drawn from as opposed to earlier times. Boxing is the opposite; whereas most modern sports had smaller talent pools in those earlier days, Boxing had an overwhelmingly large one. Its stupid to say "oh, heavies are bigger now." There were big guys back then too, and they didn't make it to the top. And what's with this slow little guys crap? Modern heavies are like, fat and out of shape!
"slow little guy ... ( 2 months ago by PUGCAT)
"slow little guy crap" might have something to do with the "cement overshoe" foot work in this match.

That's true, but Rocky was really tough to hit despite that. At least according to several people he fought, including Ali.
"The Computer Fight ... ( 1 month ago by PUGCAT)
"The Computer Fight" write a script, build some cabinets call them "computers" take pictures of them. Hire two guys to spar a few rounds according to the script, there you go!
LaStarza retired in ... ( 1 month ago by PUGCAT)
LaStarza retired in 1961, continued to box clubfighters after losing to Don Cockell, losing more than he won; yes I know Rocky Marciano turned him into a cripple or maybe he wasn't that good to start with or the comp' just got better. George Chuvalo or Ron Stander probably would have walked through either of them without too much problem.

i remember when my grandad told me about a boxer who broke Lastarza's arms by punching them. His name was Rocky Marciano, i think i was 6 or 7 when i first heared it and my fascination grew ever since, been my motivation for training and boxing for years. Awesome man, wish he was still alive, that would be annother cool Parky Interview :P
