Great video. Loved ... ( 7 months ago by RedneckkRudy)
Great video. Loved the way the predictions at the start of the video were melted with Liston drilling that speed bag like a beast. Also love the tune of "Night train". My favorite moment is after Tyson's speech about being intimidated. Seeing Ali as confident as any human has ever been with that scary sound.. impressive. Great video!

RedneckkRudy, Thanks, Liston played "Night Train" constantly. Liston's confidence reminds me of Foreman's, they both thought they would hit Muhammad and it would be over! Muhammad always showed confidence on screen, but in private he was nervous about Liston. He sure gave Sonny a boxing lesson.
They were similar. ... ( 7 months ago by RedneckkRudy)
They were similar. I think there's an essential difference, though. Foreman was "playing" to be the bad guy. Liston WAS a bad man. Messed youth, insecure, done jail time, he wanted to be accepted but he was "bad intentions". Even in 1975, Ali said "Why is Foreman pretending to be bad, he's a nice guy". We sure saw that during his second carreer & grill.Foreman had more heart than Liston, though.
What's also ... ( 6 months ago by Bonesteoca)
What's also interesting is that Tyson won his fights through intimidation as well. That's one thing he'd lose in a fight with Ali. After Liston, Ali feared no one.

Man, Liston trained to that "night train" like it was going out of style.
No, not true. He ... ( 6 months ago by ironman36)
No, not true. He won because of his punching power and peek-a-boo style. In his earlier years under Kevin Rooney, Tyson never intimidated anyone to win a fight. his punching power spoke for itself.
Very funny, ironman ... ( 6 months ago by Bonesteoca)
Very funny, ironman. Let me paint you an example. Watch the Foreman-Lyle fight. Lyle was one of the few fearless fighters (went to prison), and he stood up to a feared fighter. Now look at Tyson-Spinks fight. Spinks waits for Tyson to come in. No offense at all = FEAR. On the other hand, Buster Douglas, looking at the intimidation Tyson as child's play compared to his mom's death...well, you know...
Yeah, but with the ... ( 6 months ago by ironman36)
Yeah, but with the fight against Buster, intimidation was never the issue. Tyson didn't even train properly for that fight. First of all Tyson fired Kevin Rooney, he was out of fighting shape, and Robin Givins along with Don King, fucked his mind up. So all Buster have to do is sieze the moment.
...so what im ... ( 6 months ago by ironman36)
...so what im saying is Tyson didn't have to actually intimidate his opponents like the thug Liston does, it was his skills and power that gave him the respect in the ring. but I have to admit, that was in his earlier career which was a winning career, until he fired Rooney and the original Cus d'mato camp. and as years went by, tyson's skills decayed. leaving tyson to resort to intimidation. and thats the Tyson nobody wants to remember.
Respect, fear, same ... ( 6 months ago by Bonesteoca)
Respect, fear, same thing in terms of tactics. If you hold back, you're giving your opponent an avoidable advantage. The thing about Tyson in his later years was that he TRIED to intimidate opponents to GAIN that advantage purposefully. Earlier, his skills did indeed speak for themselves, but come on, his opponents were even more terrified of Tyson before prison.
listen, I ... ( 6 months ago by ironman36)
listen, I understand what you are trying to say but my argument is that Tyson did not use intimidation as his "jab hand" to win like Liston did.
Liston wasn't all ... ( 6 months ago by Bonesteoca)
Liston wasn't all just intimidation, just like Tyson. They were both major factors, however, because they had a large impact on all of the skills of the opponent.

look how strong tyson was ofcourse you would fear. i believe ali would fear a prime tyson to.

I laughed out loud when I read that. After Liston, Ali realized he didn't NEED to fear anyone, because he could beat anyone in his prime.

Sonny Liston wasnt ... ( 2 weeks ago by suspect5005)
Sonny Liston wasnt a bully, he was a great fighter whos intimidation came from his skill and not his mouth. Why do people always think hes a bully - listen to an interview of his, he sounds like a nice person - perhaps not the smartest - but a nice person nevertheless.
Liston was a bully. ... ( 2 weeks ago by ironman36)
Liston was a bully. yes hes one hell of a fighter. Sure hes a gentlemen outside the ring, but when it comes to the ring, Liston was the big ugly bear.

Liston was smart. He had one of the best wits in boxing history. Liston should have gone down as one of the greatest of all time, a pure legend... but the american public just fucked it up for him
