Please remember that Phil's New York Meyer 5MM is todays Meyer 7MM. When the Babbitt Co.
In Elkhart,Indiana took over in 1969, they changed the facing tables. Back in the 50's and 60's, a NY Meyer 5MM was an .080" tip opening. Today, a Meyer 5MM is a .071" tip opening. To get an .080" tip you must get a Babbitt Meyer 7MM or even better... a Morgan Jazz 7M!!!

Just Brilliant playing. It's funny we are all focused on the mouthpiece.. the cat had the sound and defined the 'new alto' sound.I believe he could have produced the same sound on any mouthpiece or garden hose. he simply defined the most excellent of all alto sounds. wonderful vid.

Let's not forget that it's not just the tip opening, but facing. My short shank C* opened to .074 feels more open than my Meyer Bros 5M Med. Both great pieces.

Phil is and will always be my idol. Phil set the standard and continues to do so in his 70's. A great sound and can he paint a picture or tell a story with his solo's. What a professional??? I play a lot Phil Woods & Pete Christlieb music for my band students. Phil will continue to play that sax while entering the pearly gates of heaven.

Our high school band director somehow managed to hire Phil Woods for a clinic and concert with the stage band in '79. This was not long after his solo on Billy Joel's 'Just the Way You Are', and for many saxophonists he was a god. I played drums behind him then but it was like he didn't need any backup - his power, swing and technique blew everyone away!

He is phenomenal, and he is a great person as well because I had first hand experience with his charitable heart. However, with that said, one cannot forget about the exploits of one Cannonball Adderley. At one point, people thought that he was the second coming of Bird.

tim: i won't swear to it, but i think it's probably almost a certainty it's slide on 'bone. after all, there aren't too many 'lefties' that play trombone that way. damn! this is one helluva session; i could watch stuff like this all day.
