whoever said Duran ... ( 2 months ago by Boxing1977Boxing)
whoever said Duran was old and not motivated? I do not really buy that at all. Duran was champion here and was stripped only because he did not fight McCallum and decided to fight fellow legend Hearns. But Duran fought another 17 years so the old thing is sort of negated by fighting another 30 times and 17 years. He was just beat up easily in this fight. I know it is hard for Duran fans to accept. Hearns was never beaten this easily.. Whenver Hearns was beaten the other guy was beaten up also.
Duran hit Hearns ... ( 2 months ago by Boxing1977Boxing)
Duran hit Hearns with a few punches but not much. Hearns could have fought one day after this and been fresh.. Duran fans why don't you just be a little humble. Duran's career was good.. He persevered. But he could not beat the guys who had skills.. If you do not believe me look at the record. Is there a mystery that the guys who beat him in these years had names Hearns/Benitez/Leonard/Hagler? He beat the other ones but not those 4. Why??? He chose to not train just for them?
What about Diran ... ( 2 months ago by pipios)
| What about Diran being passed his prime and on weightclass he never belonged in first place ? Real boxing analists put Duran ( prime lightweight Duran ) at a top 5 or even a top 3 fighter all time, over Leonard and Hearns. Do Terry Norris and Macho Camacho have better careers than Leonard ? Hell NO !, and they KTFO him because he was out of his prime.

Leoard looked like a 3rd class club fighter against Camacho and against Norris. ame shit, a guy out of his prime. Duran's carreer >>>>>> Hearn'sss |
give me a break. ... ( 2 months ago by ksjb85)
give me a break. Cuevas' shitty ass record is twice as worse as Buchanan's...didn't you say you were a trainer? you point out Duran's foot positioning which is true, but you fail to point out Hearns non-existent defensive skills, his frequently weak ass chin, and his horrible inside skills. he got owned repeatedley by guys who put pressure on him like Hagler/Leonard/Barkley/Pryor but he demolished a past his best lightweight as uses that as his rise to fame? laughable
what's funny is you ... ( 2 months ago by ksjb85)
what's funny is you use the excuse that Benitez lost his reflexes against good but not great guys like Hamsho and Moore a year after he beat Duran. Hamsho demolished Benitez easily in 1983, so how can you give credit to him for beating Duran but not for losing to Hamsho in 1983? then he tried to go back down to a weight that was better for him and still got owned by Davey Moore POST Duran in 2 rounds...facts.
and Cuevas was not ... ( 2 months ago by ksjb85)
and Cuevas was not great. you just say that becuase Hearns beat him in 1980 and Duran beat him in 1983. You say hearns beat the real Cuevas, but then when hearns fights a middleweight Duran in 1984 he's fighting the real Duran? try and make sense. Hearns got licked by guys who put pressure on him over and over again. He never had that career defining win like any other fighter in the Fab 4 and he's the only one who uses this blowout over a middlewieght Duran as a real accomplishment.
just becuase a ... ( 2 months ago by ksjb85)
just becuase a fighter wins a championship doesn't mean he's in his prime. maybe you don't like to hear the truth...Hearns beat Hill in 1991 then lost to Barkley a year later. Who's to say that Hearns wasn't past it in 1989? Any former lightweight @ 33 would lose to Hearns here...Hearns never beat Hagler or the real Leonard. if he fought him again in 1982-ish he'd lose too becuase Leonard knew to wait for him to tire out then fight him on the inside. facts.
That is why Leonard ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
That is why Leonard did not fight Hearns in 1982. He knew it would be different. And Duran was 32 when Hearns fought him. And you seem to disregard that Hearns beat Virgil Hill at 175 pounds at 32 years old. Virgil had 10 title defenses. I think the mistake Duran made was fighting Hearns . Hearns was too fast and too good a fighter for Duran to tangle with .Duran can fool with a Davey Moore caliber, but Hearns was more than he could chew. Obviously.
yes Hearns beat the ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
yes Hearns beat the real Cueves or close to it. Cueves was champion in 1980 and Hearns beat him as champion. Hearns beat Benitez as champion. Hearns beat Virgil Hill as champion. two of those guys Cueves and Hill had 10 title defenses. You do not have any facts to back up that the wins against Cueves and Hill were great for Hearns. 11 years apart and 30 pounds apart. Duran did not do this against that caliber.. Duran did not and could not beat Virgil Hill at 175.
Cueves is greater ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
Cueves is greater than Buchanan. End of Story. Why argue that point. That is like saying who is better Virgil Hill or Robert Hines (who beat Matthew Hilton). Cueves is legendary. What hurt Cueves is how his title reign ended by 2nd round knockout. But he fought a great fighter who could punch and he was stopped in 2 rounds. Same as Duran.
I would not say ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
I would not say Hearns was ever owned without dishing out punishment. They had an article once of the guys who beat Hearns after they beat him, and they said, these are the men who beat Hearns. Would you want to fight Hearns? They were all banged up. Now if you look at Hearns or Benitez or Leonard after they fought Duran they could have gone to a Hall of Fame dinner and no one would know they were in a fight. Hearns demolished Duran and Cueves with his greatest punch. Right hand.
jacobsshadow.. ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
jacobsshadow.. When he lost Duran was out of his comfort level? Poor guy. Yet when he won at those same weights he was not out of his comfort level. Duran gets so many excuses. This fight here with Hearns KOS the excuses. Duran cannot have an excuse when he was beaten up for 2 rounds and knocked cold on his face. THis fight speaks for itself and speaks to the skill of Thomas Hearns. No one else did this to Duran even when Duran was still fighting 17 years later. People are not dumb.
Duran fans think ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
Duran fans think people are dumb. Maybe the sports fan believes the excuses but boxing fans know that Duran made excuses. Why is this an insult on people's intelligence to say Duran had excuses in all his loses. Well let us take this fight with Hearns. If Duran lost because he had an excuse with Hearns, why didn't anyone else knock out Duran in the next 17 years and 30+ fights? Why did he get knocked out with a right hand from the guy who had the best right hand the last 25 years? Coincidence?
An excuse would ... ( 2 months ago by californiaOC82)
An excuse would have been if Robbie Sims would have knocked Duran out like this in 1986 But the guy (Hearns)with the best speed and right hand power in boxing knocked out Duran with just that -speed with right hand power, and somehow people are supposed to be dumb enough to believe Duran was knocked out because he was out of shape. Ridiculous. You have to rely on people being stupid for your reasons to be believed. The next 17 years and 30+ fights Duran fought did anyone else do this to him?

Its all about the ... ( 2 months ago by loner2574)
Its all about the match-up in my opinion.. Hearns easily defeats Duran, but gets knocked-out in 3 by Hagler. Hagler goes the distance with Ray and with Duran, but Duran gives up with Ray in the NO MAS Fight. This is what makes boxing so dramatic and compelling. But I will say this; The FAB (4) are the best of the 80's and argueably the best ever. This is why if you look at other sports, you question why certain teams struggle with certain opponents based on the schemes they try to run.. |
Roberto Duran was ... ( 2 months ago by loner2574)
Roberto Duran was an unbelievable fighter but he was terrible at keeping his weight under control, and I think that hurt him in some of the fights with the great fighters of the
80's. But to his defense I think he was definitely out of his prime in the mid 80's. People fail to realize that Roberto began fighting pro in the late 60's if I am not mistaken, or at least as early as 1970 or 1971.. this is a remarkable feat for him to stay competetive as long as he did. |

sometimes boxing just plain sucks..I mean, look at Hearns beat most of the best fighters, then turn right around and, in my opinion, got beaten by James Kinchin. yall remember that fight?..Hearns really and truly got beat, but they gave it to him anyway, and nobody hadnt even heard of James Kinchin before. how fukked up is that? you tell me.
