whoa there it is 2:57 the legendary Dampsey Roll takes the opponent down.
its a sport. That ... ( 3 months ago by BoxingManiac)
its a sport. That is the way that it is played. also, if he did not want to be beaten that hard, a, he would not have fought Dempsey, and b, he would have stayed down. But Jess Will is a tough SOB
You saying that ... ( 3 months ago by BoxingManiac)
You saying that about today's boxers has earnt you my respect. But Dempsey freaked because his manager bet the entire fight purse on the fight that Dempsey would knock Willard out in the first round. Dempsey wanted that money badly. So he went berserk.
that punch at 4:03 ... ( 3 months ago by illman8876)
that punch at 4:03 made MY face hurt.
Dempsey is the greatest of all time. Ali just defaults due to the fact that he couldnt fight dempsey.
3:25 to 3:40 ... ( 2 months ago by CnozzleProductions)
3:25 to 3:40 Willard isnt even standing up all the way when hes getting punched and thats pretty much rediculous. He punched him basically in the back of the head too. Get cheated.

If Johnson fought ... ( 2 months ago by dorsi40)
If Johnson fought Dempsey in 1917 to 1922 , he would be knocked out conviningly (anywhere form the 3rd to 7th round). Had they fought in there primes , it be very close but I would pick Johnson in a very close decision.
Jeannette was a ... ( 2 months ago by dorsi40)
Jeannette was a great fighter and probably the 3rd best fighter from 1907 to about 1914. I would rank Johnson #1 and Langford #2. Johnson never fought Jeannette , but if Langford or Jeannette were champion, they would only fight white fighters as that was the sign of the times. He had to fight in Paris to make ends meat and its too bad he is forgotten as he would have been champion in another era. I would rank him with Charles and Walcott , so he would be in the top 20 heavyweights ever :)

Thinkj2,
the only hate here is in you. what is this, a White can't put forth his opinion, that a Black will always make a race issue out of it??? the only thing ever Racist about it is your perceptions of it. ''stop hatin' on a brotha!'' shit, stop reading hate into an opinion of a White.

The only fair way ... ( 2 months ago by Jacob4Freedom)
The only fair way to rank fighters is to judge them in context of the time period in which they fought. I love Ali, but Jack Dempsey was the greatest heavyweight of all time. He was a fuckin killer. He had the pure talent and one-punch power of a prime Tyson, the heart of Joe Frazier, the stamina of Marciano, and the chin of Evander Holyfield. Dempsey was an offensive force nearly impossible to deal with. The dude was sixty or seventy years ahead of his time.

Dempsey is mad over rated like Marciano both were great punchers and had great durability but skill!?! Ali would run circles around both before they exhaust themselves and he would go for the kill.
Jeannette is better ... ( 2 months ago by thegoldenhero)
Jeannette is better than Johnson and Langford in my opinion. He was the best in that era and never got a shot because even Johnson drew the fucking color line.
I respect your ... ( 2 months ago by dorsi68)
I respect your opinion , but why did Langford almost always beat Jeannette and Johnson thoroughly beat Jeannette except for one DQ. So you are telling me that is Jeannette was champion he would not draw the color line ??? Of course he would as that how it was back than. Jeannette was a great fighter and better than many of the heavyweight champions , but he was #3 in that era behind Johnson and Langford
In my opinion , a ... ( 2 months ago by dorsi68)
In my opinion , a prime Dempsey would beat and possibly KO Ali (although I could see Ali decisioning Dempsey as well) and Marciano who give Ali a super tough time. Remember , Ali was knocked down by a light hitting Cooper , barely beat Jones , Chavola gave him fits and Frazier beat Ali and gave him 3 very tough fights and Dempsey / Marciano were alot better than Jones , Chanvalo and Cooper and slightly to mederatly better than Frazier.
Dempsey had a hard ... ( 2 months ago by Dr13igbean)
Dempsey had a hard time. His era was full of monsters 6 feet 4 and over weighing over 100kg. yet he knocked the hell out of all of the breaking ribs and shattering cheekbones. For you to say he is over rated shows that you don't follow boxing well. Tyson even said that he based his style on dempsey's. so did rocky marciano.
can one really ... ( 1 month ago by kelvinkloud)
can one really tangibly calculate all of dempsey's attributes in lineal form??? hence, w/in lies scrap or gold depending on ones window. who said it, huxley: "if the doors of perception were cleansed, all would be seen as it is- infinite". points is, if one takes the intangible view then u probe the naked hunger, western air, forearm burned labor, open range dreams & violent stakes. True West turn century. Dempsey world. calculus of the coil. times/space mold. could such a hook evolve today?
remember dempsey ... ( 1 month ago by nastylefthook1)
remember dempsey lost his title seven years later,,never fighting much,,lots of exhibition ,left his career in hollywood, booze and broads,,the dempsey tunney beat isnt the toned tough destroyer taking apart willard,,,seven years is a long time,,fighters peak usally last 3 to 6 years
I really have to ... ( 1 month ago by ftsjr)
I really have to hand it to Jess Willard in this bout. Although he had his jaw broken in several places in round 1, and he was clearly outboxed throughout, he managed to last for three whole rounds against a much better boxer. Although all he had was size, and lacked superior boxing ability, he showed he had heart.

good point. ... ( 1 month ago by kelvinkloud)
good point. willards heart should never be questioned. to show you how tough those times were, there was an outcry that willard indeed was a quitter for hanging it up by the 4th rd. fact is his body was starting to go into convulsions, another rd of this, in that searing humid heat & he probaly dies. Willard it should be noted was raised in a similiar envir to dempsey's. though is upbring & rise werent as tough, he nevertheless was a product of turn/century west. harsh envir breeds tough men.
found real treat ... ( 3 weeks ago by kelvinkloud)
found real treat fishing the net. some of you have seen it, but several or more, may not have. footage from the 1 st rd of the willard fight, but footage was filmed @ highest platform. significantly sharper. for ex you can pickup definitive expressional. the intensity much more palpable. also crowd shots 3-4 rows back are clear.
better birdseye view of demps footwork & setup. use google search,go to 'more' link, then to videos, then just put in key phrases: dempsey willard high angle
I do consider ... ( 1 week ago by andrewr62)
I do consider Langford a great middle-weight / light heavy and a great heavy-weight but not among the best of "all time". He's record even during his prime has legitimate losses to to men like Gunboat Smith, Jim Flynn, Jim Barry and a very very young Harry Wills. Not to mention repeat loses and wins in round robins with Jeanette and Mcvey.
