Sturm: I'll show what is in me!

WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm spoke to the press today in regard to Saturday's world title showdown against Javier Castillejo. "I am especially glad to be able to box again in Hamburg in the beautiful Color Line Arena," said Sturm (24-1, 11 KOs). "I want to show the fans what is in me. In my last fight in the Color Line Arena, I did everything as instructed, but maybe my emotions have been wrongly interpreted. I want to put things right." Sturm was referring to criticism received for backpedaling in the late rounds to preserve his world title victory against Maselino Masoe in March. Promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl added, "After the big World Cup soccerfest is this first class world championship boxing gala. The soccer had merited so much attention, now we have gotten going again. The quality of Felix Sturm and his opponent Javier Castillejo speaks for itself -- this fight is for me as a promoter quite an important fight."

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to Sturm-Castillejo, the bantamweight superfight between unbeaten WBA champion Wladimir Sidorenko and unbeaten interim titlist Poonsawat Kratindaenggym, and the Euro heavyweight title clash between Paolo Vidoz and Vladimir Virchis, it has been announced that unbeaten Universum boxer Ruslan Chagaev (20-0-1, 16 KOs) will defend his WBA Intercontinental heavyweight title against former European champion Michael Sprott. "For Ruslan, this fight is a real test," said trainer Michael Timm. "Sprott is a fast and awkward opponent. This fight becomes a benchmark [as to where Chagaev stands among] the world elite."

Not sure I'm too secure with that statement...but I'm down with where his heart is...

Damn shame, this guy should still be undefeated and should have gotten his match against Hopkins before Taylor. Actually he should have been fighting Taylor instead of Wright, he has alot of upside and talent but very little star power

I think the lack of star power comes from his dry personality, and the do only what it takes to win and nothing else strategy. He's the same as Winky Wright, he'll never go outside his game plan to get things done which you can't blame him for that. But America is where the moneys at and American's want to see people going for the kill. Just how things are, and it hurts even moreso if you fight this way and aren't even from America. Great talent though, I'd love to see him and Wright go at it - what a chess match that would be.

    Honestly...I'm really big on Sturm.

Heard a lot about him before the Oscar fight but had no clue that he was going to bring so much to the table the night he fought Oscar.

He's got a lot better fights than the one against Oscar though. Crying shame he had to lose his title that way. Total shat!

I think that he's a hell of a fighter...but I truthfully believe that he'll have some trouble with Casti. Most do. He aint the easiest to beat in the book & he's got a wealth of knowledge...it all just depends on how far he's on the slide.

    Agreed.

The lack of star power is just stateside. He's big in his own country. He's not a crossover yet simply because he aint gonna come back to the U.S. for another robbery.

    Gotta disagree raleights.

The kid's got a hell of a personality. Talkative & good sport all the way around. As far as him only doing what it takes to win and nothing else strategy...disagree there too. He's only pulled that when his title was on the line against the power boys. IWO's opinion...he's a whoooooooole lot different than Winky.

Truly think that you need to see his other fights. The guy's got power & he does go in for the kill quite often.

American may be where the money's at in our eyes...but Sturm's bordering on Super Stardom in Germany...& that's enough for him there I'm sure. Also...you have to remember...titles do mean a lot to fighters that work to keep them...America is where the money is...but America is also where he was unjustly robbed for HBO's green pockets on the Oscar Hopkins fight.

I'd tip Sturm to beat Winky...I also tipped him to beat Hopkins.

    Wacko-

What do you think about Griffin beatin up on Masoe a little better than Sturm did? Does this loss take anything away from how well Sturm did against Masoe?

    Not at all...Sturm still won.

If you look at it like that...you can say that Sturm softened Masoe up for Griffin.

I think Griffin is also a damn good prospect. I just wasn't sure how 'bad' Masoe was after Sturm tore him apart. I guess we still don't really know.

Honestly...I'm not entirely sold on Griffin...but...BUT...he did beat Masoe...so that sells for something.

Again...very impressed with Sturm...always will be...no matter what.

I say no matter what because I think that Castillejo is going to be a tall order to fill.

    You know much about him?

If not...you need to see him. Even when he was just outside of his peak...he was a handful. He gave Oscar a hell of a fight for 12 & then went down in the last round. He got up & fought it out...but IWO...that was a hell of a fight.

Also...he went toe to toe with Vargas...again...I don't rate Vargas like everyone else does & it's the twilight of his career...but he did give Vargas issues...no matter what the score cards read.

To my knowledge...& it aint on point of Casti...he's only been down once or twice in his career & only out once. Again...I don't have an assload of knowledge on Castillejo...but I know enough to say...he'll put up a fight for Sturm.

hmmm... I didn't think that his fight with DLH was as close as you did I guess, Oscar was too fast for him all night, the 12th round was just the cherry on the cake it's not as if it saved the fight like the Quartey knockdown.. And as for Vargas, well Castillejo actually lost pretty soundly to Vargas and was dropped hard early, not to mention Vargas was coming off a long layoff and looked terrible, he was in plain bad shape. Javier really only started fighting and giving him issues when he realized just how gassed out Vargas was getting, I almost got the sense he had no desire to win the fight up until it became so easy to land on Vargas due to fatigue. IMO, Sturm should be able to stop Castillejo, and if not stop him he should shut him out on the cards... After all Sturm should be a hell of alot more to deal with than a half dead Vargas, who still pretty much won every round but for a couple against Casti.

    hmmm...then your'e wrong.

Oscar sure as hell wasn't fast enough to block the jab that battered his face like a cake & I can see where you'd bring cherries into this...his face was as read as one all night long.

    Sorry...but Oscar got beaten.

I did'nt say that he beat Vargas...I simply said that he gave Vargas issues...& he did.

I'm just not so sure about him stopping Castillejo...I think that old goat's got a bit left in him still & he's not easily stopped.

I don't think Sturms got the power to stop Castillejo but he'll clean him up easy. As for Randy Griffin I thinks he's another top guy since coming down to middle. Look for him to make some noise in the near future
