I was just curious what do you looked for when you see somebody who you believe has great handspeed? IMO the individual punches particularly the lead left hook, blinding jab and cross make me think a fighter has fast hands... Combinations IMO is just how relaxed and quick a person can rotate their hips and shoulders. I see a guy like MAyweather with lightning quick singles and doubles, but slower big combinations because he puts the "hurt" into ever punch while harder hitters like Mike Tyson or Roy Jones Jr. can take heat of the punches and just throw them faster in a combination. I see guys like Leonard and Meldrick Taylor who IMO who look way faster when throwing a combinations than they do at throwing singles.

So anyways what in your opinion is great handspeed? For me its a guy like Sugar Shane who has overall the fastest hands i've seen or RJJ who has p4p the fastest hands i"ve seen.

Yep, Shoe shinning dosent mean you have grea hand speed.

But he was quick though.

I disagree with Tyson not having fast hands though... His Right Hook to Body/ Right Uppercut Combo was full blown agression and speed. Especially for such a muscular dude.

Ali had quick hands no fooking doubt.

more often than not, a hard punch is a quick punch
but it doesnt mean that a quick punch is a hard punch
for me a fighter has superior handspeed when he has a lightning quick jab
and also depends on how effortlessly he releases combinations
if it takes very short intervals between punches,
especially on punches that are hard to execute
then he has some wicked handspeed

sugar ray leonard and ali of course had fast hands

Handspeed, is what it says on he tin, power is a diferent story. Apart from the others you mentioned, Pacquiao has insane handspeed.

I didn't say Tyson didn't have fast hands, what I said was that he didn't have throw every punch with evil intent he could just throw his punches without following through each one and still hurt the opponent whereas Mayweather has to really enforce each punch.

Eery one has 'hand speed' it's easy to throw a quick arm punch... when people talk about hand speed, like what ALi/Tyson/RJJ all have, those shots having something on them... it's about being able to throw a correct punch and more off it... through proper weight transfer... it comes from two things correct and natural technique and ability... and obviously the right genetics.

it's all in the shoulders and hips, when you see a fighter doing a public work out and they do the whole 'hurricane upper cut' thing when they spar... that's nothing... just elbows and upper arm movement.

Cus would make Mike Shadow box really slowly, focusing on form and exagerating his movements, it wouldn't physically develop speed, but it gave him the mental and physical muscle memory to be able to move that fast.

Thats why his foot work, head movement and shots where so fast and that's where the power came from.

Pernell Whitaker:had good speed, but his reflexes were better than anything I was never impressed with his hand speed.
Larry Holmes:Fast jab, but everything else was average IMO.
Muhammad Ali: Probably the fastest true heavyweight matching era for era.
Ray Leonard: lighting combinations his single punches weren't amazingly fast and he telegraphed his jab.
Tommy Hearns: single punches came as quick as Leonard's IMO I also read that from Randy Shields who beat Leonard as an amateur that he thought Hearns was as fast as Leonard.
Joe Calzaghe: Once again I don't think he has amazing speed... sure he is fast, but he isn't legendarily(made up word) fast.
Ray Robinson: Once again for his time he was a speed demon, but compared to the fighters of the past twenty years YAWN.
Roy Jones Jr.: Probably the fastest hands p4p I've seen even at heavyweight he had incredible speed, but I must admit he looks faster because of his reflexes and angles.

I've never really been overly impressed with Pacquiao's handspeed... he is a tiny guy and isn't leaps and bounds faster than a young Barrera.

Some guys are quicker in different ways....You mentioned Jones...Roy held his left low a lot...This helps the speed of a punch for some reason you punch faster going up...Same as Whitiker, Ali in a way when moving held his hands low to punch...But you also have to be overall fast or you get caught. Guys like Tyso build momentum when punching in combos so once the body gets going....I agree on Mosley....Shane had some fast combos. still does but when he was younger....

What constitutes handspeed in your opinion?

Being able to drive a stick shift & stroke it at the same time.
