Thread: can anyone explain the Emanuel Augustas riddle to me

For years I have watched this guy in the ring...His recoord is deciving...When you watch him fight you can tell all the talent is there..The speed the moves decent chin ect...He is actually better than a lot of champions out there...Yet for some reason he has an awful record and never made the big break?...Any opinions on this?

He is the guy that always takes fights on last minute notice on a card where he is fighting the guys that are either hometown favorites or sponsored by the nights promoter. I agree, I think his unorthodox style is entertaining, and he has refined it quite well, but he has a hard time getting the nod in those conditions. I think another thing that hurts him is it takes him a long time to really get going, I think he waits too long to start opening up.

Would have, could be effective if he would have prepared/worked at it properly. For the most part hes pretty much become a stepping stone. If you get past him and beat him convingcingly then your good enough, if he beats you then you aint ready yet...

Man, I just watched Augustus-Ward (FOTY 2001) and Augustus looked incredible. He was downed by a body shot from ward in the 9th, but I gave him every round other than that. Considering Augustus had 2 weeks notice for the fight and IMO shouldve won...


I know he gets robbed A LOT.


I also remember none other than PBF saying that his hardest fight was against Augustus.





If you guys haven't seen Augustus-Ward than check it out. It's a great fight. I have no idea how Augustus piled up all those losses cause I have only seen a handful of his fights, but he has some great skills and seems like one of the most underrated fighters of his time.

Another thing that hurts Augustas in the decision department is that refs often hate him and his style. Look at this recap to the first Burton Fight: http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.ph...e=Fight:796763. If refs become that biased against him, we can only assume that some judges do as well.

I think they might feel that he's making a mockery of the sport, but IMO it's good entertainment. If he had more power, he'd be in a much better position, as he wouldn't have to rely on the score cards so much.

I love that drunken master stuff, and it confuses many of his opponents. I'm not sure how it holds up against the top fighters, though...

Theres no riddle here, Augustus operates at a level he is comfortable at, mediocrity. He could probably push himself a touch above that level but chooses not to. He may get the rough end of decisions at times but if his whole demeanour says "I don't care", then the referee and judges who are leaning towards the other guy to begin with are going to have no inclination to reward him for his work. The only person who can do anything about those instances is Augustus. Like I said before, he chooses not to.

Augustas is a club fighter. Nothing more. I seen his losses to Floyd Mayweather, David Diaz, Michael Warrick, Kelson Pinto, Leonard Dorin, Teddy Reid, Antonio Diaz, John John Molina and Omar Weis. And they were all legit. He jokes and plays around in the ring for most of the fight and than complains he got robbed. Maybe if he did more fighting than dancing he'll get better results. Augustas is a disgrace to the sport. He proved it when he took a dive in the Allen Vester fighter. Fuck Augustas

Well that was actually what I was trying to say by the riddle and sayiing he has the tools?...Just did not explain it enough.....My Fault ....

But he can fight...He has the ability...but he chooses not to take it serious...he lets a lot of crap slip away...The can't understand his loss...Like a fight I watched earlier when he was clowning boxing with his hands behind his back?...What goes through this guys mind...He only hurts himself with that shit!!

Emmanuel Augustus never took himself seriously. He never has a proper manager or a support team. He was a Fight anyone anywhere type of guy often on 2 or 3 days notice.
He saw himself as just an opponent. Many of his losses came from home town decisions & officials taking offence at his clowning. If he'd had a good manager & team, believed in himself & took it seriously he could have been a champion

When you see a guy like him or Pendleton, you realize the value of having experienced handlers to groom you and bring you along smoothly. Unfortunately for Emanuel, he fell into the road warrior role, and no matter how good you are if you are constantly just taking short notice fights, fighting in other people's backyards, ect you're going to come up on the short end of a few decisions.

^^ That's true of course, but at the same time if you have proper managers, you can bet they are going to tell you to take your career seriously and drop you if you don't. There are a lot of journeyman who have talent and are very good at certain things, but you can't adopt the mentality where that's enough, as I think Augustus did. Could he have been a better fighter? Almost certainly, but he would have had to act like it and put the work in as well. Even in his better performances, he either took a lot for granted or didn't actually have the mental toughness to put the exclamation point on close rounds and show that he wanted it.

That said, he beat Mickey Ward VERY clearly to me, in a fantastic fight.
