Default The Youngest World Champion in Boxing History

Is anyone capable of breaking this record

Puerto Rican Wilfredo Benítez (53-8-1, 31 KO), known as "The Radar" due to his defensive skills, became a World Boxing Champion at the age of 17 beating Colombian Kid Pambelé. At the age of 22 he had titles in three (3) different weight divisions and a record of 41-1-1 with 25 KO's. In addition to Pambelé, he fought names such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, Davey Moore, Mustafá Hamsho and Carlos Palomino, among others.

It is true that he is in a bad health condition today due to the punches and some other things that he did in his life, but I am talking about his accomplishments in the ring.

Just think, a 17 years boy beating Kid Pambelé, 22 years three (3) world titles.

Probably not many (if any) boxers would accomplish this even if they were allowed to fight professionally at 2 years.

One of the examples I do remember is Jorge Paez Jr, who turned pro at 17 I believe.

Good post! And while some considered Benitez to lack a good KO punch, he actually had deceptively good power. Just ask Maurice Hope, whom Benitez KO'ed in devastating fashion in their 1981 WBC Light-Middleweight championship match.
