Thread: The art of the slam

Not sure if anyone has seen this but a smart little clip on 'the slam'. As a judoka it makes fantastic viewing for me,there is just something about putting people hard onto their backs. Some phenomenal slams on this clip including the Rampage - Arona slam and many others. Some of them are repeated but its still a good little vid.

hey, munks, how many of those were actual judo throws? just curious. Because I know Greco Roman wrestling has some great slams too, right? Or does any throw where you can put a guy on his back score points in judo?

I swear....when Sapp piledrove (piledrived?) Nog, the bastard went limp for over an entire second before he reacted and grabbed the leg. Looked like a flash KO to me :P

Any throw that gets your oppnent to land flat on their back with force scores and ippon (10 pts), this wins the match. Other scores such as waz-ari,yuko and koka. Generally it works like this.

ONE IPPON Beats a WAZA-ARI

TWO WAZA-ARIS Make an IPPON (WAZA-ARI is the only accumulative score)

ONE WAZA-ARI Beats any number of YUKOS

ONE YUKO Beats any numbers of KOKAS

Being honest in that clip most of slams and throws are from wrestling, picking someone high up in the air and slamming them down onto the matt is a wrestling/greco roman move. They have some mad ass slams thats for sure. The only slam type move that is in Judo is a Kata Gurumua http://www.judoinfo.com/images/anima...kataguruma.htm
In all honestly in a judo fight you will not get close enough to initiate a slam, especially at a dan grade level because as soon as you move in you leave yourself open to a counter throw and thats usually what you get. A lot of the time is spent fighting for grips so you can get sufficient leverage to throw your opponent. Judo relies on speed and technique, the momentum build and speed of execution brings about the force in which the opponent lands on the matt.lets also not forget that MMA ring floors are sprung, dojos or arenas have thin matts, If one of those slams were executed on a judo matt then serious damage would occur.

The reason you see judokas get up after being slammed into the deck in comp is because we practice breakfalls religiously. Basically teaching you how to fall. Your average fella hasnt got a clue how to land and break his fall hence if your average guy is thrown with force he's not getting up. Most Judokas never forget their first full force throw onto their backs. When you are caught it kind of all goes in slow motion. Ive been in comps before, gone for an attack and then felt the counter coming but it is too late. Although its very quick it all slows down and i can remember flying through the air thinking "f*ck"...the breakfall is instinctive.
