    Default Salvador Sanchez

It may sound like a really random question but in your opinions, how good could Sal have become? How great could his legacy have been? I mean,he was 22/23 when he died right, imagine if he had carried on fighting, would we be talking about the greatest fighter of all time or certainly in the top 10? THIS MAN HAD IT ALLLLL!!!

Also, how do you think a rematch with a more experienced Azumah Nelson would have gone? In their fight,Azumah was doing really well until the later rounds, could an Azumah with more experience have done more? I;m sure when they fought,Nelson had only had about 15/16 fights!"! I should have noted this fight in the under rated fights thread,I thought it was a great fight!

I've just obtained about 6 new Sanchez fight so thought I'd see what you guys thought of him.

Sanchez looked too much like Screech to be the greatest ever.

I've watched alot of his fights and he was amazing good power good speed great chin and imo he would of beat Arguello if they met which they would have if the fatal accident wouldn't have happened his stamina was amazing he always seemed to have bit more than his opponent take Nelson fight for example both looked tired then all of a sudden comes out for 15th like it's first round and stops him he was unbelievable talent and he would of been p4p top ten easily maybe even p4p 5

    You really can't say.....
I mean look at the kids resume he fought the best at that moment Lopez, Castillo, Sanchez & Nelson.

I personally don't think Nelson-Sanchez II could have been any different as far as result of the fight....

One thing we can all agree on is that what a treat it would have been to have seen him continue to fight past his 23rd B-Day.

El Gamo have you seen Gomez vs. Nelson?
What a fight that was too, all those fights that they had between them are along the lines with the ones MAB, Erik, JMM, Pac are all having right now just that not many have a chance to see them.....

I think my boy Wilfredo Gomez would have beat him the second time around. He would have been ready for the fight the second time instead of thinking this is just another Mexican fighter that I'm gonna knock out, i mean 32-0-1 with 32kos, i would have probably been overconfident also.

    Just my 2 cents

I don't think so, Gomez was great and is easily top 5 all time PR fighters....
But Sanchez just knew how to beat him, I mean Sanchez took Gomez best shots and Gomez caught and hurt Sanchez on 1 occasion but Sanchez fought back and let his hands go and threw his arsenal. Once Gomez saw that Sanchez wouldn't go down and Sanchez started mixing it up by moving around and outboxxing Gomez with his jab Gomez IMO said fuck it! and went for broke trying hard to KO Sanchez.

    Oh! no
If it's 1 thing Gomez was, thats well prepared and well trained and ready for the fight.... Theres a video on YouTube with clips of his training and his preparation for the fight..... Sanchez was just the better man that day....

    mike_the_man,
In the fight did you see the 'Battle of Bands' as Gomez brought in a PR Band palying traditional PR music and Sanchez brought in a Mariachi playing trditional Mexican music?
That stare down between Gomez & Sanchez is one of the best I've seen cause they weren't doggin eachother or neither looked pissed Sanchez was actually grining and smiling and so was Gomez as if saying "Damn! were gonna fuck eachother up right now".
    God I love that fight....

ohh yeah the tension was bad.

i disagree on one point though CutMeMick

Wilfredo Gomez only and i mean only had 25 days to train for this fight and he still thought that he could win. i know, you know, that 25 days is not enough training to beat Sanchez thats why i say that the second time around with more training and preparation Gomez would have won.

Gomez was at that time in his career already "famous", he liked to party and go out too much and he had just gotten married and went on a cruise he called Don King and the Don told him that the fight can not be changed so he had to fight with 25 days of training.

Now is that Sanchez's fault? or Don King's fault? Definitely not, it's only Gomez's fault.

But i just have a feeling that Gomez more prepared would have won the second!

He is many p4p list of all time...not top 10 but usualy on the top 25...Like you said he was only 23 and had yet to reach his prime.....Assuming he did not get worn out from to many wars or have any type of outside problems drugs,,drinking ect....Sky was the limit...Don't know about geatest of all time though.....To this day no matter who I watch and how many diffrent greats of their era...No one comes close to a welterweight version of Ray Robinson

    Spot on mike_the_man,
But the fight had been boiling for a while by the time it finalized and both fighters were aware of the chances of it happening....

I agree, Gomez was a party animal and as cocky as they came back then....

Question though, what would make you think Gomez would stop all that party life to train for the 2nd fight?

Don't know if you remember when he fought Zarate & Nicky Perez in an interview done before both fights he said he wasn't worried one bit and he didn't need to really prepare for the fights.....
I just think he relied too much on his power and got too confident with Sanchez.....

Also I've always thought Gomez should have been DQ'd for hitting Zarate while Zarate was on the canvas.....

Well CutMeMick i agree that Gomez should have been palatalized in the Zarate fight but not DQ'd. In a big fight like that there would have been to much controversy if it would have been stop because of it.

Now I think that Gomez would have stopped all the partying for the second fight. When he lost the first fight he was very upset he said
Yo desfraude a Puerto Rico y Puerto Rico esta desfraudado de mi
(for those who don't speak English
I disappointed Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico is disappointed in me
After that fight he got on his training horse

Sanchez es mi motivacion para demostrarle al mundo y a mi Puerto Rico que soy mejor que el
Sanchez is my motivation to show the world and my Puerto Rico that I'm better than him
when Sanchez died Gomez cried when asked why is he crying if the death of Sanchez impact him that much he replied "Yes but know i can never show everyone that i can beat him"

I think Gomez was hurt by the loss and that was motivation enough to really come in focused for that fight!

thanks for the debate its a pleasure

Yeah! but I mean in the sense that Zarate more then likely would not have been able to continue and probably would have wound up as DQ...
But yeah! you make a valid point on the point deduction...

    No worries man...
If your talking about Bazooka: The Battles of Wilfredo Gomez yes I've seen it one of the BEST doc. I have seen.... I saw it on HBO not too long ago and recorded it on my TiVo but one of my little brothers accidently deleted it from there before I got a chance to record it onto VHS or DVD.
I contacted the people who distributed the DVD and contacted at least 2 more from film company and never got a response from NO ONE and I've searched for it and I haven't been able to find it for sale anywhere...
