Default Just watched Calzaghe vs. Manfredo

WTF that was a totally bullshit stoppage. I was thinking when I read about it that Manfredo was actually hurt, but he actually just started ducking and weaving when the ref called it quits. Now I like Calzaghe more than Manfredo, and think Manfredo is a chump, but Calzaghe didn't deserve the KO at least not at that point. Despite his speed advantage(And he didn't look all that fast) Calzaghe had alot of difficulty IMO countering effectively. WHen he threw punches he was landing, but the fews he tried to counter Manfredo he looked way off in his timing, and like before I feel he is pretty fast, and has a strength but he can get wild in there, and his combinations are fast and accurate, but he is less polished than the 5-6 fights I've seen of Kessler, and I think Kessler has a better chance of beating Calzaghe than I thought before I saw this fight not because Manfredo did anything at all, but I thought Calzaghe would be more impressive.

It was a terrible stoppage, but that cannot be blamed on Calzaghe of course.

I dont see how Calzaghe could have done more. He was dominating his opponent and the stoppage was beyond his control.

As for Kessler I disagree completely. Kessler has 3 names on his resume who Calzaghe would of course mutilate. Calzaghe is a step up for Mr Kessler....

And there was no KO by the way...

The ref couldve let it go a little longer, sure and Manfredo didnt look that hurt but he wasnt throwing anything back at all. Even if he was throwing the odd jab it wouldnt have been stopped. I can see why the ref stopped it because you never know whats going on if a guy isnt punching back but really all he needed to do was warn Manfredo. Just tell him to fight back and guve it a few seconds at least, if he still wasnt throwing anything after a warning then people wouldnt be so upset by the stoppage.

The ref has a history of being useless . Although it was a quick stoppage , I think we can all agree that it didnt make a blind bit of difference as the result would have been the same whatever the round

I know Calzaghe would have won, but my point was it was a horrible stoppage, and it will give him way too much credit. Miles, opposition isn't everything as you will see when Mayweather faces ODLH on May 5th. YOu can tell how good a fighter is without them fighting the best opponents. However I would say that Kessler has foughten better guys in Soliman, Mundine, Beyer, Andrade in overall than what Calzaghe has faced of late. You say you can't see how Calzaghe could have done more? He should have been able to read Manfredo in 30 seconds if he as good as people say he is. He should have been in there throwing combinations in the first minute of the fight, and countering better. Roy Jones Jr. would have totally dominated Manfredo if they had fought when he was at 168, and then he couldn't take him out early he would fall back and continue to pummel Manfredo from afar.

as much as I hated to see Manfredo lose because of that stoppage I understand why the fight was stopped...you cannot have your back to the ropes, take 20 -25 punches regardless if most of them were blocked, not throw any punches to show you're OK and expect the fight to continue....it will never happen....you have to throw if your back is on the ropes......safety first....I don't fault the ref because he doesn't have the luxury of instant replay....
It feels good to be back home.

That stoppage was bullshit. Jermain & Kessler need to stay away from Britain. The only place to get a fair shake is in the good ole U S of A.

I still think its crap. Manfredo was starting to work out of the combination when the Ref stopped it. It's the same thing as the Jones vs. Merqui SOsa, but at least Roy had already hurt, and dropped him before that.

Yeah it was crap, I was really disappointed at the stoppage but what can the ref do? I would say he stopped it early but we are talking seconds.
