"The long-term health of the sport hinges on the heavyweight division," he says.

"Without an American undisputed heavyweight champion, I don't think interest will be rejuvenated.

"The average man in the street cannot currently identify any of the current heavyweight title holders.

"Some of the daily papers from major cities won't even be sending a correspondent to the Mayweather-De la Hoya fight.

"The only way we will get the fight on the back page of our paper is if Mayweather knocks out De la Hoya and we get a great picture.

"And I don't think that will happen."

Oscar de la Hoya v Floyd Mayweather, Sunday 2 May, 0330 BST, BBC Radio Five Live and BBC Sport website

The guy should be talking about the long term health of the sport in the USA. It's popularity doesn't seem to be too bad everywhere else, the likes of Pacaman, Cotto, Kessler the Klitschko's being national hero's back home.

I didn't read the article, but I agree with what you say here.

As an American, it drives me nuts to have to always read articles proclaiming that "boxing is dead" or that no one cares about boxing anymore.

The ONLY place where boxing is losing fans is White America. Boxing is still tremendously popular in Europe, it's still popular in Asia. Boxing is still extremely popular among Latinos and African-Americans.
There's only one part of the population in one country that is not supporting boxing like it used to.
