Default Should Spinks be p4p? (hear me out here)

Lets just look at these facts here.

I know a lot of people don't like Cory Spinks, but I was just looking up his record and I noticed a few things.

He has taken a lot of risks that fighters these days and right now aren't taking, and won't take. And is also very avoided. I know a lot of people don't dig his style but check this out.

He fought this guy named pichirillo or something in his hole town of italy after being robbed in the first fight and took it. And he won the title.

In his first title defense he fights Rocardo Mayorga who was THE HOTTEST THING in boxing at that moment and thought of as somewhat invincible and he took him on and he outboxed him and became the Undisputed Welterweight Champ.

For his FIRST defense of that belt he takes on Zab Judah who was coming off a first round win on the same card Spinks won that Undisputed title in. (granted it was against some journeyman but still impressive)

His fight with Judah was close with both of them hitting the deck, but he beat Zab Judah that night regardless.

Now Spinks won the fight in the eyes of some clearly enough that he didnt HAVE to rematch Zab Judah. But he did it anyway(a risk most fighters don't seem to be taking nowadays)

And he fights him and he gets knocked out.

But as his comeback fight, he moves up to 154 to fight this Made in Hell guy who had just beat Kassim Ouma and knocked him down twice.

Spinks fights him after coming off a knockout loss and moving up in weight to face "arguably" the best 154 pounder up there(Ouma the exception, but he beat Ouma prior to that fight)

And Spinks in his first fight at 154 beats the BEST 154 pounder out there at the time.

And now in his next fight, nobody at 154 wants to fight Spinks because he is very avoided(would have liked to see him face Kassim Ouma or Simms though)

But what does Spinks do? In his very next fight he moves up to 160 to face the Undisputed Middle Weight Champ in the champs backyard basically in his FIRST FIGHT at 160.

So lets look at Spinks last few opponents(discounting the easy one in between)

    Pichirillo
    Mayorga
    Judah
    Judah
    Karmazin
    Taylor

That's quite a resume and considering he has beaten everyone on that list at least once(Taylor the exception) I think Spinks deserves a lot of credit, when you put up his last fights and the times he took them against some other ones today.

People say p4p is not only about who you fight but the risks you take, risk rewards. And fans are always complaining that their fighters dont take the risks to be considered p4p.

Spinks has taken those huge risks and payed both ways because of it(the good and the bad) and he's still up there fighting bigger challenges and bigger risks. if that isnt p4p I don't know what is.

Don't flame me here, but what do you think?

And Hulk I know you're lurking, say something other then "Mayorga got robbed" or "spinks runs like a girl" if you're going to respond

    Opinions anyone?

You make a few good points there. I dont think he is a top P4P guy but u cannot deny he has an impressive record. H rarely gets spoken about on this board for a multi weight champ. His style is maybe to boring to be a star.

I'm with yee! on this one here.
Being P4P has sooo many criterias quality of opposition is just one of 'em.

Also oddly enough you feel he was robbed in Italy BUT you also feel he legitemately beat Zab the 1st time.
You also don't mention that a shit! load of people almost everyone I talked to thinks he lost to Karmazin.

You also don't mention theres 2 loses amongst those fights.

For the sake of your arguement I would inlcude his win over 'Santa Tokyo' also.

before he lost he got KOed by Judah i thought he deserve a top 10 P4p spot but not now. plus i don't even do P4p list anymore. there too subjective

like you said he beat Mayorga at a point when mayorga was one of the hottest fighter in the sport. Mayorga also seem to be unstopable with his great chin, punching power and great stamina. Spinks gave him a boxing lesson and became welter weight champ of the world.

Nice argument Majesty yet words can be twisted to make anything sound possible. He still lost to Judah in the rematch and that would make him lose his spot. I give him alot of credit, and I think his fight with Jermaine is going to be harder for Jermaine than people think, yet to say an upset will happen probably not. If he does that then he will be P4P.. I have been thinking about this fight alot and the one thing is he is a boxer and who knows if his style matches up well with Jermaine. Jermaine is going to have to work his jab and try to get Corey with some follow up right hands and left hooks to the body and then start landing more combinations and knocking him out. .

Agreed on point. Except for that I feel he edged Karmazin. And he looked VERY good until he gassed out. I like Cory, except his entrances.

    as for maj

    Legit argument.

But he lost the first Judah fight

    And the second one too.

I give him his props for coming back and beating Karmazin though. I think that was a clear victory(even Karmazin said so). And that was his first fight at 154 too.

Whilst he's a very very good boxer,he does not have the resume to be P4P, Absolutely not! And I believe Zab won their first fight and the Karmazin fight was close too. NO WAY p4p imo.

Fair point you make there. But his next fight is a strange one for me. I'm a big fan of taylor and cant see spinks even hurting him. Definately should of stayed 154 and weigh up his options there. Taylor convincingly for me

I believe after the first judah bout, ring magazine did have him in the top 10 p4p. he is a bit underrated these days but he needs another big win.

Probs to Maj for making a fair argument outta the improbable... But most the debate for Spinks rests on an enormous IF.

IF he beat Taylor though, damn Maj you might have a bloody good point there!

to you Majesty. I'm a big fan of Cory Spinks and think he's definitely p4p top 20 although he clearly isn't top 10 material just yet.

I think he's one of those fighters, like Tarver and Sergio Mora who the majority of people like to hate and belittle but the kid has talent.

Unfortunately he has two achilles heels, one the fact that he's only got enough in the tank for 8 rounds (would make a great Contender fighter!) and second his punches are so weak that I can imagine some Tibetan monks who probably punch each other harder in the face just for a therapeutic massage to invigorate their muscles.

But aside from that he can most definitely box, he's always taking the hard fights and he is entertaining.

I really like him, one of my top 10 favourite fighters right now.
