Good Day one and all, and welcome to another Friday night's boxing.
Tonight's entertainment was a bit of a last-minute job, as Peter Oboh, who held the belt for three years without a fight, pulled out of a bout with Tony Oakey one hour before they were due to get in the ring. He was immediately stripped of the belt by the British Boxing Board of Control, who promised Oakey another shot, and here it is. That was three weeks ago, and since then this bout for the vacant title was organised, with the winner's next fight against mandatory contender Brian Magee before the end of October.
The tale of the records gives us a fairly balanced fight for me, showing:
Tony Oakey (23-2, 5KOs) is one looking to resurrect his career after a very promising start saw him claim the WBU Light Heavy title and Commonwealth Light Heavy title, and seemed to be progressing well towards and European challenge, when an unexpected loss to Matthew Barney in his fifth defence of the WBU title derailed everything. Added to that, Oakey's blood was found to contain traces of cocaine, and a 12 month ban added to his anguish. Shortly after his return he lost out again in a contraversial 96-95 defeat for the English Light Heavy title against Peter Haymer, judged by referee Grant Wallis. Since that defeat in 2005, Oakey has been recovering, with four points victories. His last win was a March runout against Josip Jalucic in a wide points win.
Steven Spartacus (19-3, 11 KOs) - Spartacus (real name Steven Smith) is well known for his "gladiator" image, and is also a former victim of Peter Haymer, and is coming off a defeat to Ayittey Powers in December. He'll be coming in glad to have a shot at the title, even if it is at short notice, and will be hoping to make the most of his chance. A former British Masters champ, and the former English title holder, he shares a lot of the same names on his record as Oakey does, and being slightly taller will also help.
Even though Spartacus seems to hold the more power of both fighters, I feel Oakey's experience will prove the difference as he gets a points victory.
Also on the bill is Peter Haymer, who had been scheduled to fight Spartacus on the undercard, the return of Lenny Daws, and the rematch of the fantastic scrap between George Hillyard and Tony Rendall that was a four-round wonder back in january.
10pm UK time, so I think that's 5pm EST, and the rest of you will have to do your own maths
