Roy must have forgotten the names Roberto Duran and Pernell Whitaker when he got KTFO by Tarver and Johnson.
When did he say this?Originally Posted by JonesJrMayweather
Merchant was always a big fan of Mosley, but he was even a bigger supporter of Whitaker's.
Benny Leonard and Roberto Duran are the Best, Shane couldve been up there with them but he didnt fight the same kind of opposition so we will never know

Well he is top 5 easily i don't know about the best because he didn't quite have competition at Lightweight but he would give any of the greatest Lightweights a real tough nights work thats for sure.
I could see Mosley easily competing with Benny Leonard and Roberto Duran at LW. Don't know if I agree with him being #1 though...
David Lemieux = Future MW Champ and P4P King
Can't say he's the best. Had the tools to maybe be the best lightweight, but as it stands, not the best.
Roy is a pretty good judge of a boxer though, and gives credit where credit is due. He always said (when he was p4p #1), that he wasn't, and Ricardo Lopez was. Just thought I'd throw that in.
Actually he might be right.. I think Mayweather might be too defensive for lightweight Mosley, and if you guys saw the exhibition between Mosley and Julio Cesar Chavez where he absolutely dominates Chavez you might be inclined to agree. Also Jones would have said it earlier than when he faced Tarver and Johnson because Mosley fought MOrrales in 98.
Yea i got a link to that Chavez vs Mosley exhibition and watched it wow what dominationOriginally Posted by Taeth
As much as I admire both Shane Mosley and Roy Jones I think a) Shane Mosley is nowhere near the best lightweight in history and b) I could understand the claim more if Roy Jones had fought at that weight and fought Mosley. I dont think Shane could have lived with Duran in the early 70's or Carlos Ortiz. Going Back further you've got the great Benny Leonard, Freddie Welsh, Battling Nelson and Ad Wolgast. These remarks have to be taken in context... too many people are referred to as legends these days (sometimes by commentators who should really know better). For what its worth I beleive the best light weight ever was a young hungry Roberto Duran!!
I'd say its even between Duran Mosley and Whitaker. All three had different styles but Duran moved up to beat the likes of Leonard, but then again you could put the Mosley of back then in those lists.
roy said this in 1998..and merchant made his statement during shane's walkout for the leija fight...Originally Posted by SweetPea
