It's always nice to just take a break once and a while and connect with some of the things that got you interested in boxing in the first place.
    Thanks much.

I have another shelf load of ebooks to unload here later, but for now I'd like to share a special treat with all of you.

From western martial arts enthusiast and passionate devotee in redistributing many rare treasures for all to see, Kirk Lawson's Storefront.

    Excerpt from webpage:

"First, you'll find re-publication of antique Martial Arts manuals, focusing mainly on manuals important to the Western Martial Arts traditions, though not exclusively. These manuals are faithfully hand transcribed from original text with the original images scanned. Though I hold copyright on the text formatting and on the scanned images themselves, you are free to download PDF's of these historic texts, free of charge, at no cost and to re-distribute them provided you adhere to the legal terms stated in the foreword. Essentially this is that you agree not to attempt to profit my hard work. My intention here is to ensure that these works are available to the Western Martial Arts community at large."

It's an excellent service that he's providing with no monetary gains. He's transcribed and republished the Edwin Haislet manual from my botched raw scans, and I sent him the missing pages that were absent from the orginal compiled pdf.

I have also sent him another excellent scanned boxing manual by Philadelphia Jack O'Brien in that he has republished and is currently working on.

If you find any books that you really like from Kirk's Storefront, I recommend getting the shelf-friendly treeware version so that you make notes, as well as writing down the graffiti of your mind.

    Rock on!

There's no book on him that I'm aware of. Anyways, here's good quote by James Toney that tells a little about his learning:

"Bill Miller, he was a great old man, he sat me down and showed me tapes of old fighters," Toney recalled. "Ezzard Charles, Albert 'Chalky' Wright. Battling Siki. People like that. Jersey Joe Walcott. Archie Moore. He would say, 'This is how you learn. This is the correct way of fighting.' So I would sit there and watch tapes over and over again, and try those things in the gym, and I would get murdered. But I kept coming back, kept coming back, kept working, kept learning my trade. And then one day it was like each of those fighter's spirits entered my body and made me fight like that."

“I developed my style by watching tapes of old fighters. I watched Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott constantly, and Tommy Hearns , Marvin Hagler . I learned a lot from watching these guys and studying. Some of it just comes naturally. “

Watching the videos alone isn't what developed his style. James Toney (at least early on) had to train his butt off, and even seeing the right right moves being done on those old tapes he still had to put it together on his own. No doubt that we would get hit trying overcome that learning curve, but like he said, one day it as like each of those fighter's spirits entered his body and made him fight like that.

Oscar De La Hoya- The Great Hispanic Heritage (2008')

    Info:
When he was just a skinny, shy kid riding his skateboard through the streets of the East Los Angeles barrio, Oscar De La Hoya never thought he would one day be one of the world's premier boxers, setting records and winning championships. Neither did anyone else. However, when he was just six years old, he stepped into the ring with his father's encouragement and shocked everyone with his speed, power, and agility. He spent much of his childhood and teenage years honing his talent for defeating opponents in the boxing ring and accumulating wins by knockout. "Oscar De La Hoya" is a "made in America" story of a young boy with a dream and the perseverance and determination to make it a reality.

I haven't seen an ebook of it. You might want to try your public library. Here in Michigan they have a very well organized request system in that you can request books from other public and college libraries to be sent to the local library. He's definitely an interesting boxer. I just requested the book, Charles Burley, The Life and Hard Times of an Uncrowned Champion.

Reading Newspaper Articles via Google News

A friend of mine just showed me a nifty feature of Google, called Google News. I can look through many newspapers although mostly the NY Times, but it give me a wide range of information on fighters as well as their boxing matches.

You can see for yourself here: Google News Archive
-I set the date for 1870-1970, and you can change that around depending on what you're searching for. It's set for "free articles only", so if you want to find any articles that require payola, then you're welcome to change the settings as you see fit. Check it out, there are a lot of interesting articles out there.

As for another online newspaper resource, you might want to consider this: Chronicling America. It has newspapers from 1900-1910 some of which have excellent boxing coverage for the time.

Cinderella Man: James J. Braddock, Max Baer and the Greatest Upset in Boxing History - Audiobook

This was a very interesting look into the life of James Braddock, emphasizing his spectacular accomplishment of seizing the heavyweight crown from Max Baer. It's information is right on, captivating and much more in depth than the partial story displayed in the movie. It's a good read, and in this case a pleasure to listen to. Enjoy this audiobook.
