Boxing – Edwin L. Haislet
by Edwin L. Haislet

Info:
"The problem in boxing is not only which skills and techniques to learn, but when and how to learn them. Literature in the field at the present time seemingly ignores this problem. In any field where continued development rests upon the mastery of each element in its correct place, the learning sequence is all important. Great skill in boxing can result only through mastery of each technique in its proper place. There is a proper learning sequence in boxing which, if followed, allows a natural development to result. Ignore it and the development of skill is definitely limited.
The learning sequence herein presented is the result of experiment and experience. It is not perfect and no doubt further experience will bring constructive changes. It is, however, a sequence which seems to bring the quickest results and greatest skill with a minimum output of time and energy. Followed closely, it enable the student of boxing to continue as far as is desired, ability and determination being the only limiting factors."

Jack Dempsey, How I Got and Keep my Fighting Muscles
by Jack Dempsey

Info:
This is a neat short article that contains his ideas when it comes to getting fit staying in shape. This was taken from an old out of date physical culture magazine that I had found a few years back. I included a fun one page advertisement by Jimmy DeForest that’s Titled, “You might be the man to beat Dempsey!” Perhaps this reflects the spite that they had for each other at the time.

Boxing, A Guide Devoted to the Art of Self Defense
by John L. Sullivan

Info:
Spalding’s Boxing book with contributions by the one and only John L. Sullivan. The quality for this scan is a low resolution making it difficult to make out the text. Although the pictures are clearly visible, some parts are missing. Nonetheless this book is a rare find and should be interesting to look at.

Boxing for Beginners, with a Chapter showing its Relationship to Bayonet Fighting

by William J. Jacomb, with introduction by Joseph E. Raycroft.

Info:
Editor’s introduction: The book, Boxing for Beginners, consists of three parts. The first shows how to box, the second describes the relationship of boxing to bayonet fighting, and the third tells how to organize a boxing tournament. Although the first section is omitted and the third section is summarized because they are exactly what one would expect, Raycroft’s introduction to the third section is included as an introduction because the remarks give insight into the War Department’s reasoning in teaching boxing to soldiers.

Knuckles and Gloves (1922)
by Bohun Lynch

Info:
"In this little-known gem of boxing history published in 1923, author Bohun Lynch observes, "There was a delightful simplicity about the old boxing matches." The men fought to the finish; that is, when one failed to meet his opponent in the center of the ring. A round ended with a knockdown or a fall from wrestling, and only 30 seconds were allowed for rest and recovery. From the giants of bare-knuckle prize fighting through the pioneers of gloved combat, the men of these early years forged the renowned science of boxing in the cauldron of brutal, bloody, long-lasting bouts that would be inconceivable today.

Knuckles and Gloves covers this fascinating era in the history of boxing - the 18th through early 20th centuries. By describing in colorful detail a number of legendary bouts in chronological order, Lynch provides a valuable examination of the period when the sport transitioned from the use of bare fists to gloves, as well as snapshots of the great fighters of the day. Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Robert Fitzsimmons and James Corbett are all familiar names to modern boxing fans, but here you will also read about Frank Slavin, Jem Belcher, Tom Spring, Tom Sayers and other early combatants of the ring. Lynch’s informed commentary about the development of boxing during this important period makes Knuckles and Gloves a thoroughly enjoyable read for any enthusiast of the sport."

I hope you enjoy it. It's funny because last night 5-6 guests registered just to download these books. Anyways there's more on the way so be sure to check by soon.

I have the orginal Jack Dempsey scan if you don't like that one. The information is the same, some guy went through a lot of trouble transcribing and editing it. I posted that version up because of the smaller file size. Be sure to go through the other books. Georges Carpentier life would make a great movie with all the things that he went through, in the book the way he describes it makes it fun and exciting to read. The Roosevelt book by Mike Dovovan has a lot of interesting stories as well.

It should keep you going for a while.

Anyways to download from rapidshare just click on on the link, it should bring you to a window where you have see a premium and free button.

Click on "free" that'll bring you to the page where you have to type in 4 letters, which then you just have to wait about 1 minutes and then you should be able to download it.

Even as a fighter it's good to have have something to spur you on, especially when your interest is lagging. Talking to a guy that knows his boxing, reading a good book, watching some good fights will give you that feeling where you just want to get up and go. It can be a good pick me up in a way, especially if your enthusiasm is fading and your workouts are beginning to feel stale.

It's always nice to just take a break once and a while and connect with some of the things that got you interested in boxing in the first place.
