Pacquiao sees Valero as only worthy opponent

Manny Pacquiao wants to face next as his next opponent World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion Edwin Valero, a Venezuelan knockout artist. And he is even willing to stay as a super featherweight, before going into the lightweight division, just to do that.

Remarking on Marquez's purse demand, Pacquiao said: “Mahirap kalaban si Marquez kasi humihingi ng malaking premyo. Gusto niya mas malaki pa ang premyo niya sa akin. Di kami magkasundo. Pero kung papayag sa negotiation, walang problema na matuloy ang laban."
(Marquez is always asking for a big purse. He even wants his cut to be bigger than mine. We cannot reach an agreement but if he is willing to negotiate there's no problem and the fight will push through.)

“Sinabi ko nahirapan ako sa timbang, pero parang pabiro lang namin sa grupo," he said. "Pagtimbang ko, naka-shorts pa ako. Sakto lang, 130 lbs. Tinakot ko lang kasama ko na overweight ako."
(I said I was having a hard time making weight but I was just playing around with my group. When I went up the scale I was even in my shorts, weighing exactly 130lbs. I was just scaring them that I was overweight.)

"Naisip ko na pagkatapos ng fight ko kay Barrera, sabi ko aakyat na ako siguro ako 135 pounds," he said. "Tapos may nakapagsabi: 'Sino ba tatalo kay Manny Pacquiao?' Ang sabi: 'Tanging si Valero.' Parang sabi ko: 'O sige, bababa muna ako ng 130 pounds. Mag-stay muna ako. Hintayin ko na magkatagpo kami para mapatunayan ko kung kaya ko siya talunin."
(I was thinking that after the fight with Barrera I would go up to 135 lbs. Someone asked who can beat Manny Pacquiao, and they said only Valero. Then I said, ok I'll stay at 130 lbs to prove that I can beat him.)

"Di pa siguro puwede mag-retire," he said. "Sa tuwing may fight ako, nagkakataon na nagkakagulo ang ating kababayan. Pagkatapos ng fight ko, nagkakaisa ang sambayanang Filipino. Di pa tamang panahon na magretiro sa boxing. Di pa naman ako 34, 33 o 32 – 28 years old lang. Kung titingnan mo, 22 years old nga eh."
(I cannot retire yet, everytime I have a fight the country is in turmoil. After I fight the Filipinos all become united. It's not yet time to retire. I'm not yet 34, 33, or 32. I'm only 28 years old. If you'll look at me you'd think I'm only 22 years old)

Thankyou for that KK,CC. I disagree though, IF the JMM fight cannot be made, then he should fight the winner of Guzman Soto(unless they prefer to fight JMM for the title). The I would not mind seeing a Valero fight.

With regards to JMM wanting a bigger purse, I think he is confused. One of his close confidents even said that JMM wants parity, not more.I think it's fair,I mean MAB recieved the same as Manny,so why shouldnt JMM?

    Bullshit.

A Valero fight means nothing at this point because right now Valero has yet to do really anything but knock a bunch of no hopers out.

He hasn't fought anyone on the level of even an extingquished Barrera.

JMM vs Pacquiao II is what needs to happen & Pac knows that.

A worthy opponent ?? what a load of crap Valero is a prospect who can bang but has shown major flaws theres much better fights that can be made.

whatever fight pac takes he always get some flack. even with jmm, some will say he's facing a old fading fighter. although i agree that the marquez fight is the most compelling fight as of the moment, a valero match up is also a feast for the fans. they can possibly hold it in canada.

I havent' really seen anyone mention JMM as fading. He is old, that's a fact but he's still an awesome awesome fighter. With the others,he should be criticised. Why David Diaz name is being mentioned,I have 0 idea.

Valero can be criticised too, especially as even most Pac fans(on this very forum) say he has not beaten anyone and is over rated. I would not mind seeing the Valero fight because I'm a big fan but it's easy to see why fans would not want to see it. The reason Wacko stated is perfectly legitimate. I'm biased because I'm a fan and I think it would be a war!

i say let's see how jmm does against juarez first. what if he loses? what if it he wins a close or even a controversial fight? then the pac rematch wouldn't be that compelling anymore. and EG, believe me there are some who says or will say jmm is on the decline especially if manny beats him in a rematch.

Why does Jmm have to prve himself anymore, he beat Barrera same as Pac did, prior to that he had been let down only by the judges having fought Pac.
Pac should be chomping at the bit to fight him again if he feels he truely is the best.

    A couple things:

    1) Marquez is infact older than Barrera and Morales, but has had less ring wars. This makes Marquez's physical body much younger than the other two.

    2) Marquez has to win convincingly against Juarez to avoid any talks of a rematch.

    3) Pacquiao plans to fight in February, June, then November in 2008 which is smart considering he's in his physical prime now. The great thing is, the super featherweight division is set-up to make all three of those fights big ones. Optimally, I see it going like this: FEB vs Marquez, June vs Valero, November vs winner of Guzman/Soto. If this can happen, and Pacquiao pulls it out, he will be fighter or the year without a doubt and basically reserve his place in the Hall-of-Fame.
