Thread: Why Isn't There Any Footage Of Sugar Ray Robinson As Welterweight ??

I watched Robinson vs Lamotta yesterday St Valentines Day Massacre and i was looking for some Welterweight fights of Robinson but couldn't find any why is this ??

MAybe he wasn't that famous by that weight div?

Uh,,,no. He plenty famous. I'm pretty sure the Kid Gavilan WW championship is floating around somewhere. I know he was serious businessman about demanding portions of TV money, as well as his share of gate money. That might have had something to do with it. Just a guess.

I have a few of his fights at welter, though they are mostly highlights. I have his fights against Angott, Fusari and Dykes. I have some in between, but they were non title fights fought at the jr middleweight limit (even though the class didnt exist back then). But I agree...for some reason his welterweight fights are pretty rare. I dont have or ever see the Gavilan fight anywhere...not sure if it even exists. Or the Tommy Bell fight, which was his first Welterweight title fight.

In all the documentaries about SRR, they mentioned the films were either lost or destroyed for the welterweight years.

that's sad. I won't be able to do my research then.

I've seen some of his fights, my friend bought some of the original films from a old guy who used to live in new york and ran one of the old cinemas that they played his fights at.

you should distribute the videos for the world to enjoy and see.
