Default Does this guy ever sleep ??

Doesn't it seem like he just fought yesterday..man he is staying busy. WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon (33-1, 30 KOs) and fellow Olympian Eduardo Escobedo (20-2, 14 KOs) were cordial toward each other during an open workout last Friday at the Azteca Gym in Bell, California. Things won't be so friendly when they collide in a pay-per-view bout on Saturday's Mayweather-Hatton undercard in Las Vegas. "I know my opponent is good and I know he will be ready," the champion told Fightnews.com. The rest of the article is there.

Ahhh now you added the rest in....Ponce is one of the few guys out there who fights 3 or more times a year on a regular basis...most guys come out of the gate fighting at least once a month but when they get to the contender status they get drop to once or twice a year.....I remember when champions defended no less then 3 times a year as a rule....

and to this in the 40's and 50's they defended their titles 5 or more times a year.....

I think Robinson defended his title 5 times in 2 weeks once

The problem is that a decent champion realises that all he has to do to set up himself financially for life is fight two or three times a year for five years, and he'll never have to work again. I realise that even back in the day the champions were very prosperous and rich people, but it has grown a bigger problem in the past two or three decades.

Well it could be worse....Back in the early part of the 1900's and during the 1800's they had giuys who would go years without defending their titles

When you can get "easy" nights like Ponce can you might as well earn the dough.

Great fighter to have on bigfight undercards.

Was about to say something along those lines... Sure it's great that he's fighting often on big cards, and giving fans some good KO's for their money, but it's not as if he's taking his weight class by storm or setting an example for other belt holders.. He has essentially never faced a top fighter who was a hot ticket coming into the fight. Penalosa is a damn good fighter, but he spent years in obscurity before fighting De Leon. I also thought it was a relatively close fight, not the lopsided affair that the scores suggest.. But anyways, with the exception of that fight, he hasn't put in a hard night's work since he became a fan favourite. Nothing wrong with that, especially when he prepares for a hard fight and finishes early;I just don't feel he deserves any more respect for his activity than many fighters, since he's taking on some softer opponents. He's also in strong division, I wouldn't give him much more than a punchers chance against Marquez, Vasquez or Caballero. De Leon vs Molitor would be a great matchup.

At least he is out there fighting guys...I can name a bunch of champions who fight less often and against weak opp...at least the guy is out there more often then not....I am not trying to defend the quality of his choice of opp but....like Fenster said he is great to have on undercards of big fights and at least he will stay sharp and keep improving in every fight....

    I don't understand fans... I sware I don't. (Not you Mars)

Theres another thread about Williams having not fought since the Margarito fight. In that thread others and I said that he needs to at least stay busy/active fighting.

Now heres a thread about a fighter who's out there fighting as often as he can and doing what fighters are supposed to do which is go out there and fight. Hes as exciting as any fighter out there and P4P one of the hardest '1 Punch KO artists' and people are throwing in but's and if's at him. Now BELIVE ME I understand what you guys are saying about the quality of opposition here but let's be realistic here. Let's look at Wilfredo Gomez quality of opposition to somewhat compare it to Daniels.

(By any means Am I trying to downgrade Gomez here just pointing something out)

Gomez won his Super Bantam title from the heavily favourite Yum then Gomez went on to defend this title against these guys:
    Raul Tirado who was 5-2-2
    Sakad Petchyindee who was 2-0-0
Nestor Carlos Jimenez who was 67-12-2
    Julio Hernandez who was 4-9-0
    Carlos Mendoza who was 37-13-4
    Derrik Holmes who was 14-0-1
    Jose Cervantes who was 22-7-4

At the same time, Gomez has the huge names there Sanchez, Zarate, Pintor, Nelson, Kobayahsi among others.
To me what Daniel is doing today is no different then what Gomez did.
Daniels already fought Celestino who's proved to be no easy task for anyone. You also gotta mention Sod & Rey both whom leading up to the fight were no easy task for anyone. The fact that Daniels beat them in that style does not diminish them as fighters.
Daniel will fight the big names the time will come and whether he wins or looses that'll remain to be seen.

and like I said before he is staying active...every opp can't be the #1 challenger but again I can name champions who fight once a year against the worst of opp and call it a day.....the guy is busy...putting the title on the line...getting better and when a big name is available I am sure he will be on it in a second....

IMO there are too many champions who just sit on the title waiting for only the big payday fights,,,,
