I'm sure there are more but that is all I could think of right off the bat.
Since Tyson we have been in a time of Huge PPVs. Which one of these top PPV fights would you consider the biggest let down.

Roy Jones Jr vs Antonio Tarver 3.
I say Trinidad- De La Hoya.
Tyson - Spinks was an incredibly short fight, but I wouldn't say it was a huge letdown, because it was such an awesome and dominant performance by Tyson.
De la Hoya - Mayweather didn't have a lot of great action, but it wasn't as bad a fight as some people made it out to be, and it was actually a little bit closer than many people thought it would be.
No one thought Hopkins - Wright was going to be exciting to begin with, so I don't think it disappointed at all.
Tyson - Holyfield II was shorter than expected, but given how bizarre of a night it ended up being, I doubt many people felt that they got really ripped off, because they saw one of the craziest scenes in sports history.
On the other hand, Trinidad-De La Hoya had all the makings of an awesome fight. It was supposed to be the Leonard-Hearns of the new generation. And it ended up being a worst case scenario. Neither guy really earned a win. Basically, De La Hoya lost the fight, Trinidad didn't win. That was just a huge disappointment all around.
As much as the Oscar fans hate to admit it, that will always be the most talked about part of Oscar's career inside the ring.... running away and giving away the biggest fight of his life.
I voted for Trinidad- De La Hoya, but I can think of a few more going back 20 some years, like Holmes-Cooney.

Sorry but can i ask what disappointed you about Holmes vs Cooney fight ?? that was incredible battle and one of the best Heavyweight fights of the 80s IMO.Originally Posted by LuciferTheGreat
I will say Trinidad - De la Hoya as well. Even though I am the rare fan of both.
De la Hoya Mayweather is a close seccond given that it was the highest grossing fight in history and I never even bothered to see it again after the first time. I usually see a big fight at least 3 times. Heck, I must have seen Trinidad - De la Hoya 30 times.
See the thing is Trinidad - De la Hoya was a rare thing. Two champions, both undefeated, both stars in their own right. There was no doubt that the two men meeting that night were the two best welterweights. Odds split right down the middle. De la Hoya was a slight favorite but most agreed it was a toss up. And both guys were known to be exciting power punchers with really high KO percentages. No one ever expected DLH to do what he did. Never had he fought that way before or since. And what made it worst is he didn't follow through and lossed it.
Add to that the fact that a rematch was never made and this will probably go down as the biggest disappointment in boxing history.
An incredible battle?? It was a one-sided destruction. Cooney was just exposed as an overhyped fighter who benefited from some serious reverse affirmative action.Originally Posted by Ricardo "Finito" Lopez
I added the Hopkins Wright fight cuz despite what you said (and I agree with you) it was actually a PPV success.Originally Posted by SweetPea
Spinks - Tyson is now considered treat to watch as an example of Tyson at his best. But at the time Spinks was considered a real threat and if I remember right it was a pretty expensive PPV for that time.
i voted for del hoya v trinidad. it was billed as being the modern day leonard v hearns. to be honest it was a fight that was more lost by oscar than won by felix
It was not one sided Cooney was fighting pretty competitive, with Holmes up until the stoppage. The commentators thought it was quite close including Sugar Ray Leonard who was commentating on the fight. And the Judges had it close as well.Originally Posted by shza
Except for the knockdown in round 2, Cooney landed some big shots on Holmes and was fighting pretty well against Holmes i remember in one round i think it was the 10th, both men stood toe to toe and threw bombs at each other incredible round.
After watching Oscar's performances against Quartey and Whitaker there was no doubt in my mind that Tito would KO Oscar. Both fighters put in disappointing performances with very little engages, total opposite of what we expected.
The career of Bernard Dunne. Was hyped to be the world's next great Super Bantam. Horribly exposed by Kiko Martinez.

Not sure if it was PPV in the States but we had to pay for Eastman Hopkins. That was so shite I gave up smoking.
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough
Charley Burley
Thoes of you that have voted for Hopkins-Wright what type of fight were you expecting?
It was never a good match up to start with and proved to be a dud.
