Thread: Roberto Duran's Fights Which Ones Should I Watch ??

I had a debate yesterday with a couple of members, and i want to learn more about Duran and watch his fights, i have downloaded Duran beyond the glory and i will get round to watching that. But what fights would you recommend watching ?? i have seen these.

Seems like you've hit most of the big ones, You could try Benitez, not one of his best performances though. I know for sure De Jesus 3 is out there, never seen 1. I assume his fight with Carlos Palomino's out there somewhere.

CutMeMick would know the best ones. Most if not all his big fights are out there,I have ALOT of his fights.Working my way through some of the more obscure ones now. Duran was amazing.

That fight always reminds me of Tito vs Reid, Reid won title early like Moore. Them he faced vastly experienced champion aka Tito, just like Moore did with Duran. And they both were never the same after those fights but Reid was competitive with Tito for 6 rounds, Moore just got battered from the opening bell.

If you want to learn more about Duran, his book "Hands Of Stone" is a great read and really insightful into his career and life. It goes pretty in depth into a lot of the fights too. hes my favorite fighter of all time and I learned a lot about him from the book. As far as his fights. The rematch with DeJesus, and his fights vs. Carlos Palmino and the 1st Leonard fight are his best performances imo. Lampkin and Viruet were also good ones, and as far as all out wars go Duran-Barkley is as good as it gets. Just a vicious fight from start to finish.

Well in a way that was a do or die fight for Duran....Duran had a spoiled reputation from the No Mas fight....Plus he was getting up there in age and people were starting to say he was finished as a fighter.....(Remember at that time once you were in your 30's your career was pretty much winding down especially in the lower weight classes)...Duran made a statement that night....

The eye was closed since the early rounds. It was a significant handicap. Moore never had a chance. Looking back, I'm surprised they let the fight continue as long as they did. The significance of the victory was overstated.

As for the thumb being speculation, well it was entirely typical of a injury caused by a thumb, probably accidental. But it would be hard to prove a thumb caused it or not, I suppose.

I don't think it was that much of a factor, Moore was never in the fight anyway. He was just too inexperienced for someone like Duran.

Yes Moore was never in the fight. I'd say the eye had something to do with that. Now if you are saying that having one eye closed since early in the fight is not much of a factor against a guy like Duran, well then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

If its a prime Duran your after, the greatest and most complete incarnation ever to grace the ring, then I suggest his third bout with Dejesus. This showcased Roberto at his absolute peak, it was in my estimations one of the most masterful displays of pugilistic wizardry ever seen.

A tier down would be the first leonard encounter, Palomino, also at Welter.

Lou Bizzaro at lightweight, Buchanan, Kobayashi.

In his later marauding days as a wise old lion, Barkley, Moore, Cuevas.
