Be sure to do lots of stretching, not just before and after workouts, but whenever you can, and keep practicing the dash. You'll get better at it as you go.
Work on your start over and over, keeping LOW TO THE GROUND. Make sure that you aren't standing completely up till at least 10-15 yards. Talk to a track coach, he can really help you with running form, leg pumps, etc, that will bring your time down. That's why 40 times for football are such bullshit. I was a RB in highschool, and when do you ever run 40 yards straight without getting touched. But I know that's what colleges and everyone else looks at to compare speeds. Don't just run 40s, pyramid your workouts like one day run 20x10, 15x20, 10x40, 5x100, 2x200, 1x400..etc. But if you are serious about lowering your 40 time, talk to a experianced highschool or college track coach. I had a friend work out with me in college before I joined the military and I helped lower his 40 time froma 4.65 to a electrically time 4.49, and since then he actually has ran faster then my 4.46 But if you want to train for football, work on your strength and conditioning, lots of squats and cleans, and anything overhead.
