Great, great article on Eastern European Boxing
If you, like me, like to get an idea about what is happening out there in the boxing world beyond your average HBO or Showtime broadcast, then you should do yourself a favor and read this article from Fightnews: "Eastern Europe 2007 Review" http://www.fightnews.com/sukachev55.htm
Always nice to see that boxing is truly a global sport, and interesting to read something from 'the other perspective'. Also it certainly piqued my interest in a lot of fighters and prospects I had never heard of or at least knew very little about. Anyone here able to give more information on names such as Ayup Arsaev, Alexander Bakhtin, Alisher Rakhimov, Vitali Demyanenko, Paulus Moses, Kuvanych Toygonbayev, Dmitry Pirog or Stanislav Kashtanov among others? Alexander Alexeev I was already pretty big on, but perhaps even more so after reading this.
I'll allow myself to post the awards from the end of the article:
2007 AWARDS
Russian fighter of the year (by the RPBF): Grigory Drozd
Russian fight of the year (by the RPBF): Alexander Povetkin – Chris Byrd
Russian promoter of the year (by the RPBF): German Titov
Event of the year: Sultan Ibragimov – Dmitry Kirillov
Accomplishment of the year: Yuri Nuzhnenko, WBA interim title
Prospect of the year: Alexander Alexeev
