Thread: World Boxing Hotspots?

OK I was going to PM some people about this but apparently I don't have enough posts yet

I'll probably have to move to find work at the end of the year - probably overseas.

I figure if I have to move anyway I might as well make sure I move somewhere that's good for both my work and my boxing.

I have a training partner who's moving to New York in June and he said I should go with him. I also have a friend from uni who's planning on finding work in Spain or somewhere around there and she wants me to go with her too.

I'm trying to plan it now so I can see what kind of jobs are around in that region and make sure I weasel some training in the right areas to find employment there during the final year of my PhD.

The low level technition job I applied for had no fewer than FIFTY applicants so there's not a lot of work here. I'd be waaay over qualified for that kind of job but I'd still lucky to get it!

I figure if I have to move I might as well move overseas since moving interstate still has me living a long way away from my family.

So suggestions? What area of the world and I likely to find the greastest density of good boxing gyms and preferably good medical care since I'll probably need it at some stage?

I might only have 5 more competitive years left but I'd like to learn as much as possible while I still can.

Hey Sharla, I reckon that you'll find boxing wherever you go, but from a boxing perspective it'a very good idea to go somewhere reputed and where you'll findthe help you need.

In New York, there's Gleason's Gym; A Friend is contemplating going there for the summer and I reckon he'll be finding out more soon.

In Detroit there's Kronk, little more needs to be said, If you put in the work there they'll take you anywhere.

Wildcard Gym in Hollywood is a cracking gym also.

I have a friend who trains out of the mma gym "Undisputed" in San Diego.

Sheffield England has the Ingle gym although the style they teach is so different it may confuse any fighter who dares enter!


London has a number of respected clubs too.

Can you describe their style? Sometimes I'm not sure if I've been taught a conventional style or not myself - or if I am able to do what is conventional anyway!

Thanks for the input. At this stage it's good to have a few different places in mind because I might not be able to just find work wherever I choose to go and I guess I might not be able to find a coach with time for me wherever I find work either!

I can see that while I'd learn the most training in places where boxing is big I might also find that I'm not of the calibre that will guarantee coaching in places where so much talent already exists!

Well the three most notable fighters to come from this gym were Naseem Hamed, Junior Witter and Johnny Nelson.
Hamed and Witer are bothe switch hitters that are typical of the Ingle stye. Hands low, feet spread wide and combinations flying from all angles. Their defensive arsenal involves a reliance on reflexes and evasiveness and the always seem to be in good condition.

Theres also Fraziers and Costello's out of Philly

Funny I was talking to a trainer from Liverpool a good coach working with the England squad tuesday at the Institute of Sport. Asked him how his Gym was going in Liverpool, his reply, you cant get them in, they are to busy taking Drugs and shooting each other. Makes you think.

I know myself and two of my best friends would sell our collective souls to get a trainer who actually gives a toss about teaching us.

Meh,same in the states,though Fraziers is doing pretty good.I offer probably the cheapest Pro level gym in the area,and all I get are phone calls about being too hung over

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me I have no life because I like to spend most of my spare time training or doing sport related activities I'd be a millionaire! I don't get it myself - in my opinion if you take to much of anything which has you feeling out of it all the time you're avoiding life not living it!

My best friends tend to be people who are into sport since other people look at me like I'm an alien when I talk about - well pretty much whenever I talk!

Still once some of us are bitten by the boxing bug we're stuck for life and that's it - it's not negotiable and then as hitmandonny says you'd LOVE to have a good trainer with some time to teach you something occasionally.

Where I am now there's a big emphasis on everyone being able to train ouselves because it's supposed to demonstrate strength of will, independance etc. While I and the others understand that we sometimes wonder how much faster we'd learn if I had a little more feedback.

A few days ago I noticed Brent sparring one of the less dedicated guys in the gym. This guy is one which has been coming for a while but on and off - not consistantly. As soon as they start sparring the non-consistent guy has something to prove and tries to take Brent's head off. They end up having a war - without head gear, wearing old gloves of questionable quality.

I was just wondering where the figher's coach was - there's always a coach for the boxercise people doing their little cardio workouts but these guys could actually hurt each other and there was no one to stop them!

I guess that's why forums like this are important - so people with 'no life' like hitmandonny and myself and our training partners with a thirst for direction can work out which coaches to come and pester

And of course pester them online a lot too

For a long time now I've trained independently and I've always gotten myself into good physical condition, with minimal instruction or help. If were avble to receive a little one on one tutelage I feel I could be twice the boxer I now am. However, it seems that as long as I train in this country I won't get the help I need.

Ditto - I tend to think though you're prone to showing a lot of initiative and eventually you'll find what you need in a trainer. Perhaps it'll be a case of a trainer finding what he needs to be inspired as a coach in you too!

I've lived overseas before and I wasn't in a rush to move away from my family again. Now I can see I need to for job security (or at least relative job security) anyway I think a chance to take another step in my training education might be what I need.

Sad thing is there's such a great atmosphere in my gym. There's more than one of us eager to learn and we have great facilities. It's just that the coaches already have their hands full teaching the cardio classes or with personal non-gym related things I don't know anything about.

I can't hold it against them personally because I know they don't mean us any harm and they have their own lives to live. At the same time you only live for so long and those of us who are geared up to compete want to make as much use of our relatively injury free time as possible!

I think I'll really miss a lot of people in my gym! We spend so much time together it's like a second family sometimes!

Thats a real pity Sharla, it's terribly frustrating to be in such a position.

Although I guess the most important thing is, when I go coaching full time, I'll have a unique perspective on this situation.

Yeah I think you'll make a good coach Hitmandonny - see why didn't you hapen to be older than me and therefore finish competing before me and happen to live on the same continent so you could coach me and all the guys at my gym full time!

If I ever have any kids and happen to live on the same continent as you - you might have to train em! Careful what you reply to that coz you know 10 - 15 years for now you might have forgotten but I won't have!

Don't you worry, I'll train nearly anybody when I'm done myself. It's looking like my own pro career will only be a taster because I've got obligations already and If it doesn't make me money quickly I won't be able to do it full time. However, It will be a great expierience to have when I do train people.
