Default Odd story about Golden Boy, Ponce de Leon, Linares

    There's an article on m a x b o x i n g, I can't put a link but you can go over there, look at it, called "A step up or a set up for Ponce?"

Kind of an odd story, apparently Golden Boy Promotions and Ponce, or his manager, are not working well together and GBP wants Ponce to step up to 126 to fight Linares. Thing is Ponce's manager doesn't want it basically saying he'd get his ass kicked. Only thing he'll say is that they'd do it if Linares went down to 122, which is obviously a non-starter.

Also says that Ponce's manager was willing to move up to fight Pacquaio. Basically just to take the ass kicking for a lot of money.

Whole thing seems a bit odd, seems a bit shortsighted for GBP to mess with Ponce's career since he's a bit of a fan favorite. Maybe they think he's just a loss waiting to happen because of his lack of skills and they want to build up Linares name.

Either way, odd story, he needs to stay where he is for awhile, fight people like Penalosa, Juan Manuel Lopez.

I think Molitor, Vasquez and Marquez beat him anyway.

Sound's like Oscar has takin GBP's Into the full dark reality of promotions. It's not pretty but sometimes you have to offload what may ,In some promoters eyes, be a vulnerable Investment.
I like De leon's fire and go for it style but he has defensive flaws that are blinding.I'll settle on rematch with Penalosa. The winner of Marquez vs. Vasquez would be fun.......Damaged as both may be now and after I think both can take Ponce.

To me Ponce is very overrated. The last two fights I've seen were just mediocre nothing really serious about him very slow combinations, but he can put asses in seats.I say screw it fight every big name possible get your big payday's and get the hell out.

I agree on liking De Leons all out style at times but it will bite him in the ass against guys like Vazquez and RM....IMO if he rematches Caballero he loses...If he jumpe up a division to fight Lineres he gets beaten badly...IMO he would lose to Enoki and without a doubt looks like a fool being beaten by a wide UD if he ever faced Chris John

He's great to watch but limited as far as boxing ability goes. They tried teaching him to box and gradually moving him up in class but we saw the redults his last couple of fights. So what you have is a crowd-pleasing undercard fighter who can be the opponent for a world champion but almost guaranteed to lose. Like Rocky Juarez except exciting to watch. You can't blame either the fighter or the promoter for the positions they're taking here.

I've only seen de leon a few. I remember thinking this guy has the worst jab of all time. there are who throw no jabs that have a better jab than this guy. Any long story short Linares would kill him.

Is Linares even a big money fight though? Its not like there cashing him out against ODLH.

They could make money with him fighting guys he at least has a relative chance of beating. Don't see any need for them to put him in with Linares except just to help Linares. Pacquaio would be another thing entirely but Linares is not some big money fight.

Well it appears that they wanna clear PDL out of the way.
Which is strange since PDL has headlined several events this past year for them.
One things for sure every sport is a business and when that business side gets exposed as a fan (At least for me) it leaves a sour taste.
These fighters step in the ring and fight (especially PDL) and put their lives in the front line.

Hope in the end it all works out for PDL.

Basically GBP are being idiots towards Ponce and trying to feed him to the sharks. They are practically saying(without saying it) that they want him to lose. How unprofessional.

Why would he move up to 126 and get beaten up by Linares when there are more makeable, profitable matches at 122?

Ponce may not be the greatest fighter ever but he is exciting and powerful. By becoming a champ,he has already gone much much farther than most had originally predicted and he gets credit for that from me.

It's incredible,a worl champion and yet I think,no I know for a fact I'm more technically polished than him! Incredible where heart, determination and will got him!
