Do not pull your hand back, to the side or drop while throwing any punch, get a friend or trainer to tell you if are doing it, you will be surprised.

Hooks, are power punches so use some power and should be thrown in combinations of 3,5 or more.
The longer the hook the more powerful eg levers, but keep your arm about 135 or 45 degrees depending how your measuring the angle
Elbows, keep them down they telegraph and lose the power of a punch
Power, boxing is all about the hips, by rotating your hips forward you generate the power of the punch, using your arm for power will tire yourself out and does not give a powerful hook. Your arms are your tools, the hips are the power.
Hands should be chin/shoulder height and shoulder length width apart.
Side on, hooks are delivered in a curve motion, like a circle imagine a fireman's hole through your head and out your ass and through the floor, you cannot move your legs, you turn the hips, do not lean forward and deliver a great hook. They also land at the side of a target so the side of the bag or side of the head eg the ear(ouch but i needed an example)
Head, keep it focused at the person, he is trying to KO you, keep your eyes on him at all times, when hooking, clinching, breaking, on the floor, when he is pounding you, never take your eyes off him or it is lights out.

    Man gotta love the hook...

Well you basically turn over on a jab and put some weight in it and you got it. You want to use it after the right cross as a defensive punch OR anytime you want as an offensive weapon of mass destruction. Close range is GREAT for the hook to the body or the head and if you're good at feinting punches you can copy my favorite move feint the overhand right and blow the guy out with a quick hook...there's no telling how many people I have caught with that....I just want to laugh at them when I land it because it works EVERYTIME they never learn.

In your basic stance your feet should be under your shoulders so you can move and so you can shift your weight from one to the other. Your left shoulder should be forward, left leg rotated inward so left toe is @ at 40angle to the right toe (pointed at foe with the heel @ 2" off the floor) Left arm bent so elbow rests lightly aginst the ribs, left hand (knuckles outward) @ at shoulder height 10" or so forward. To throw a hook drop right foot flat, toe now at a 90angle from foe, allweight on straight right leg. Left heel comes up, pivot toe inward. Turn hip, then left shoulder as far to right as possible. Left hand hasn't moved at all as of yet, now the tension created will whip it through. Keep this in mind; as fist travels on an arc, raise left elbow such that at finish the two large knuckles of left fist touch your right shoulder. Right glove should be inside left chin tucked behind left shoulder
