    Default Sparring help

Hi guys my name is alex, and im an ametur boxer... well kinda! i

    im 17 years old and 5ft 11. i weight 78 kg

ive always wanted to do boxing, but i diddnt have a way of getting down my club.

I recently discovered to my joy, that there is a club in Hove (thats in england by the way) and got my ass down there.
i have been training 3 times a week with Scott welch (previous British and Eurpoean Heavy weight Champ in pro boxing, not amatuer) every now and again i get taught by Chris Eubank (im sure you know who he is).
Recently scott has been thinking about putting me in for some amater fights, and has been giving me some hard sparring practice with some guys from the club... one probelm, they are all lots lots better than me, and i have no idea how to deal with them.
I dont want to tell scott because i dont want him to think im not ready, this is a lifelong dream.
Ill give you a run through of my opponents and their fighting styles and i was wondering if you could give me any hints:

    Ben:
hes 23 yrs old and stands at a mere 5ft 6, but dont let that fool you. he was a previous olympic silver meddalist in teakwondo, and he moves at the speed of light! he took up bodybuilding about 5 years ago and hes bigger than arnie, and punches like tyson. as you can imagine from a short bloke he uses both hands, and slips inside my guard all the time

    Nav:
hes mid 20's and about 6 inches taller than me. hes been boxing since he was 9 and now hes bloody good! he has harder puches than normal and an airtight guard.
he can go offensive and denfesive, but he strength lies with counterpunching. he wits till i make a mistake and basically sharges through me landing 5 or 6 punches in rapid sucsession. did i mention he dances about like ali?!?

    Aaron:

this guy is alot takker than me, and a skinny bitch. hes got arms about the size of my whole body and sits there jabbing me away from him. he moves really quickly, so by the time hes finished punching me hes off!

    Chris Eubank Jr:

yes thats right i spar with Chris Eubanks son. hes 19 years old 6ft 4, , and roundly as wide as i am tall, hits like a train and really knows how to box. i can hit him a fair bit, but the more i land, the wilder his punches get, and trust me you dont want to be getting hit by one of them.

thats about it, i do fight other people, but i can beat them. i took my first KO the other day which was an amazing feeling, some guy tried to duck under my jab with out realising i was going for a jab to the head and a cross to the body, it put him in another time zone!
i dont lack punching power (im not saying it couldnt get any better) and my speed isnt bad either. throgh about 14 hours of ammased shadow boxing im not really telegraphing my punches any more. hwoever my footwork isnt so great, and has been even worse recently due to recovery from a fractured ankle.

    anything you guys can suggest?

    thanks alot guys, you rule

    alex

You're one lucky son of a gun. You landed on one heck'uva opportuning and make the best out of it. If you can't beat them learn from them. I can't tell you much more than what you already know, unless you get more specific. Just saying you should be able to recognize whats their qualities are (speed, power, mobility etc) and what their skills are, and absorb everything that makes them magic.

If there's anything in particular, just tell us your problems, ring experiences and we'll help spike ya with what we know.

    thanks for the reply

i just got a phone call froms cott, i got my first amatuer fight in 7 weeks and 5 days YAAY.
im nervous already i cant imagine what its gonna be like when i get there.
i suppose i need tips on how to parry and counterounch properly. when i block i seem to lose the ability to ounch back effectively, i cant seem to time it right.
what should i do when i get in the ring, at 78kg im gonna be top end of middleweight, with 81 being the british max. should i go in first round and try to take him down, or wait for him to make the first move an adjust. am i just being a normal n00b, and thinking too much?

ok you know where cheetas gym is dont you!. ABC is directly behind the swimming center, by the sea. you have to walk to the other side of the king alfreds. if your looking at the swimming center from the outside the club is to the end, and on the right hand side.
its underground tho (actually under the ground) the entrence is a ramp that goes downwards, and how funny is this, we share the area with the bowls club! HAHAHAHAHA makes me laugh every time, all these old people is the other half, and us kicking the shite out of eachother here!
There are loads of trainers, and the boxers are always happy to help you if there isnt somone areound, and trust me we got some good boxers.
How long have you been boxing/ have you had any bouts?

oooh, not long, month or two, I have a heavybag and use it (+ shadowboxing) for about an hour a day, plus agressive rollerblading for about 8 hours a week! I've done a lot of reading up on it, but i'm going to Peru on the 30th of this month, for 6 months so I want to carry on with it out there!
When I come back I can put my all into it! So When I go tommorow, shall i bring my bag glvoes and wraps? And is there an entrance fee?

you can bring wraps tomorow, but you wont be needing gloves. how old are you? i
ll be down tomorrow, but slight later, cause i have to go rowing then boxing. Ill turn up in a grey hoody, and end up in a blue tanktop and silves shorts. Ill probabely trun up about 15 mins late and by theat time youll be drunning round the hall doing a warmup.

You can bring handwraps by all means, but we have loads of gloves there. you might want to bring a mouthguard with you aswell if you want to do sparring (and it is a good idea). If you want to do sparring you can always go with me. We have headguards and you can wear that. youll spend the first round just punching at me, and i wont be throwing anything back, just to show you how it all works. the next round ill be jabbing back, but ill be aiming for the forehead, and your wearing a headguad so your gonna be fine.
dont worry i wont hit you hard, and there arent loads of people watching you when you spar, evryone is always doing something.

If you come and introduce yourself to me (just say hi, we were talking yesterday ill show you about etc) im 17 years old, and like i said, silver shorts with a red stripe and a blue tanktop. im also 5ft11 if that helps.
there is an entrance fee of £2 for under 16's and £3 for over 16's (or free if your a fighter like i am now)
it starts at 7, and the warm up goes on for half an hour. then youll go into shadown boxing (with the coaches advising) while the coach seperates us into groups. Everyone is grouped by skill level, with the same skill levels doing one excersize at a time. one group will go skipping for the first bit, one will go on the bags for the first bit, one will go sparring, and if there is an extra large number of people one will go shadow boxing again.

    help you atall?

I can use both but have movement a little restricted in the right, plus its less powerful as I dont use as much in day to day life! I was more thinking about cos its fairly solid, hurting the other person (i know thats kinda the ponit, but i was thinknig of it being an unfair advantage)!?

haha, no youll be fine. unless your opponent spontaniousely decides to take a face dive at it (in which case its their own fault for being silly) then your gonna be fine and dandy
if it doesnt hurt to punch with, and you say its your weaker hand then your gonna be a southpaw. that means your gonna have your right hand and right foot forwards when your punching.
this does however mean youll be doing the quicker punching with the right hand (the jabs and the counter hooks) and the power punching with your left.
because your gonna be southpaw you will be punching more often with your right hand.
does this make sense to you? if it seems like a really dumb/blaringly obviousely random thing to do tell me

I dunno, which is more powerful thinking about it, i'm right handed btw! I hook harder with my right, and am faster with my left, mayb a regular Philly shell kinda thing? I guess i'll have to get someone to tell me after they've seen me!?
